Val Kilmer reuniting with Tom Cruise for ‘Top Gun 2’

Top Gun Maverick Tom Cruise

The Paramount movie, which hits theaters next summer on July 12, 2019 and is now in production in San Diego, follows fighter pilots who are entangled in a drone-driven airspace which has made their flying obsolete. Not only Tom Cruise's character from the first edition became iconic, but also his tough competition in the form of Val Kilmer as Iceman received awesome reception.

The actor confirmed Top Gun: Maverick was officially a go previous year.

Director Joseph Kosinski is calling the shots for "Top Gun: Maverick" which is being bankrolled by Simpson/Bruckheimer and Skydance Media.

Are you excited about the onscreen reunion of Kilmer and Cruise? There is not a lot known about the plot of the sequel to Tony Scott's hit from the '80s, but info continues to keep trickling out.

The original Top Gun had cemented Tom Cruise's career making him a global star. As automation and technology have advanced, pilots are becoming a thing of the past as unmanned drones are the hope of the future. Although the title Top Gun: Maverick floated around briefly, the film is now without an official title. Filming is already well underway - Cruise tweeted a photo announcing the project to his fans last Wednesday with the hashtag "Day 1".

It's official! Maverick will not be without Iceman in the highly anticipated Top Gun 2!

Kilmer will be reprising his role as fighter pilot Iceman (aka: Tom Kazansky), according to the Wrap. With Kenny Loggins on board for a new version of "Danger Zone", this movie just keeps getting better.
