"That's a good question".

"That takes a great deal of work, a great big commitment on the part of North Korea as well, and there'll be a parallel set of security assurances that are also big and bold and different", the top U.S. diplomat said. While U.S. intelligence officials know little about Kim and his regime, which tightly controls news and information in North Korea, analysts said Kim is sure to be studying Trump's large cache of public statements for clues as to how to negotiate with him.

"It's unknown territory in the truest sense, but I really feel confident", he told reporters.

But Trump - for whom a major accomplishment would bolster his position ahead of midterm elections in November - baffled observers when he said he did not think he had to prepare "very much" for the summit.

Trump's diplomacy with North Korea has been cheered on by South Korea, whose new leadership is more supportive of engagement with the North than any South Korean government in years. [But] if I think it won't happen, I'm not going to waste my time and I don't to waste his", he said. "Everyone said, you know, the haters, they say, 'Oh, you're giving him a meeting.' Give me a break, OK?"

SBS News spoke to members of Australia's Korean community and others with a connection to North Korea about their hopes for the summit. "It's about attitude", Trump said of the summit before meeting Thursday with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

During a promotional event, dubbed the "real" Trump-Kim summit, the men waved at shoppers as they walked through the crowded Bugis Junction mall.

The North invaded the South in 1950 and the ensuing war saw the US-led United Nations troops backing Seoul fight their way to a stalemate against Pyongyang's forces which were aided by Russian Federation and China, before the conflict ended in stalemate and an armistice which sealed the division of the peninsula.

"They know [those countries are more prosperous and developed], but they don't know at what level and how different the countries are".

One US website this week said the meeting would shine a light on Singapore's "repressive views on free speech", referencing the country's media landscape which critics say is heavily controlled by authorities.
