Lewis Hamilton: Mercedes chief hints at Canadian Grand Prix strategy optimism

Daniel Ricciardo

Verstappen clocked a best lap in one minute, 13.302 seconds, outpacing nearest rival, championship leader and defending four-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes by 0.088 seconds.

As well as boosting his own championship hopes, Vettel was quick to remember Ferrari's past after securing the 54th pole position of his F1 career. It's a dream of mine and seeing how passionate people are inside this team, and being one of them, makes me proud.

"Yesterday we felt quite competitive and the vehicle was behaving quite well, so we were quite confident for today's qualifying, but we were not on the pace today unfortunately", Alonso said after qualifying in 14th place.

"The auto was incredible in qualifying and it just kept getting quicker", said Vettel, whose Ferrari team were using new engines. If I'm on the seventh race with a hard circuit on engines, I want to see it through. "I guess I woke up the right way and what a day".

"It's very hard. We have a great auto but our whole package is not the best on every single track and we just have to accept that. Of course our competitors have a bit of an advantage with the new engines, but I think it will be a close qualifying tomorrow". "But it was fantastic". The Dutchman had topped all three practice sessions leading into qualifying. "I was a lot happier with the auto and I think we can carry that into the race". The vehicle has been working really well and we know in qualifying we are missing top speed.

When asked if he felt Red Bull had the pace for pole after seeing teammate Daniel Ricciardo go quickest in Q2, he said: "I knew we had a good auto, but I wanted to wait and see how competitive we would be in Q3".

"It's such a fun track to drive and we didn't have any problems, I really enjoyed it", said Hamilton, who has won the last three straight races on the Montreal circuit.

Vettel called the incident "ridiculous" on the radio at the time, and questioned what the drivers involved - Valtteri Bottas, Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz and Kevin Magnussen - were doing.

One reporter asks him his thoughts of how he would go down in history for his achievement, "if this flight is successful". This trailer was first aired on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight before it arrived online for all to see.

"That definitely was a good chunk of time there, just in that corner alone was pole position for sure". Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel is second with 96 points and Red Bull Racing's Daniel Ricciardo is third with 72 points.

"On paper it's not that satisfying but I actually feel we made a lot of progress in qualifying", said the Australian.

"Tomorrow hopefully we'll get a good feeling and hopefully it's not too different to what we've been driving today".

Sauber driver Charles Leclerc was 13th, with McLaren duo Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne never looking like a Q3 threat and ending up 14th and 15th - separated by just 0.009s.

The failure added to a miserable weekend for Grosjean, who has yet to score a point this season and damaged his vehicle slightly during Friday's free practice when he struck a groundhog.

"We got pole today for a reason", said Vettel.

In the morning session, Williams driver Sergey Sirotkin spun and hit a wall, but was able to continue.

Hamilton will start from behind the front-row in Montreal for the first time in seven years.
