Italy PM agrees with Trump that Russian Federation should return to G8

French President Emmanuel Macron addresses a press conference at the conclusion of the G7 Summit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she finds President Donald Trump's tweet disavowing a common statement after the Group of Seven summit in Canada "sobering" and "a little depressing".

At the close of the summit, host Trudeau said the new tariffs on Canada under national security pretexts were "insulting" and that "Canadians are polite and reasonable but we will not be pushed around".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called United States metal tariffs "insulting" and announced retaliatory measures.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of betraying Trump with "polarizing" statements on trade policy that risked making the USA leader look weak ahead of a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Europe will implement counter-measures against USA tariffs on steel and aluminum just like Canada, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, voicing regret about Trump's decision to withdraw support for the communique.

At a news conference held in Charlevoix, Canada, Trudeau announced that all seven countries in the summit had agreed on "a joint communique".

"International cooperation can't depend on anger and small words". "We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the #G7 summit", spokesman Cameron Ahmad said.

The US leader left the summit earlier than planned on Saturday to fly to Singapore to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which he described as a "mission of peace".

Trade war: European Union to put tariffs on U.S. after Trump’s ‘depressing’ tweets
German Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas also condemned Trump's move, according to Deutsche Well , a German news publication. G7 includes the seven leading industrialized countries of Britain, the United States , France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada.

SPD leader Andrea Nahles accused President Donald Trump of turning the G7 summit into a disaster with his tweets and bowing out of his worldwide responsibilities.

Trump appeared to have taken notice and pushed back: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the US massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers", Trump said in a tweet.

Trump said that in meetings with foreign leaders he'd floated the idea of countries dropping all import barriers, saying the United States would do the same in return.

He also announced over Twitter he'd instructed US officials to not endorse the statement, which serves as a declaration and recap of what was decided in the meeting.

At his closing press conference as the summit's chair, Trudeau announced all G-7 nations had worked hard to finalize a joint statement, which largely committed the nations to keep talking on trade. "But it did not start with this G7, but with the election of Donald Trump", said a European official.

Trump turned heads last week by slapping steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and the E-U, provoking retaliation and widespread worry of a brewing trade war...and he didn't let up. "We are open to dialogue, but that does not mean transforming a defined process, linked to the implementation of the Minsk accords", he said. "Both of those things could happen", Trump said, warning that it would be "very bad" for Canada and Mexico if no deal could be reached among the three countries.

Trump dismissed Trudeau's comments as "false statements" before announcing the United States would withdraw from the communique.
