Pompeo Says U.S. Objective For North Korea Summit Hasn't Changed

Trump, 71, landed at Paya Lebar Airbase on board Air Force One after cutting short his time at the G7 summit in Canada.

While the main attraction of the summit will inevitably be the historic meeting between Trump and Kim, that wasn't the first world leader he met with on this trip.

"The fact we have been chosen as the site of the meeting, we did not ask for it but we were asked and we agreed". That evening, he said in a tweet that "great progress" was already being made and that denuclearization - "not just a freeze" - was on the table.

The North has presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to the country's neighbours and the United States as a logical next step and completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent in response to what Pyongyang says is a policy of "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.

"It's unknown territory, in the truest sense", Trump said during the G-7.

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States, insisting he would swiftly achieve what previous US administrations have failed to do.

Exuding confidence, Trump said he has done relatively little formal preparation. "It is a historic negotiation, and there is no way this president is not going to stand strong", Kudlowsaid.

Prime Minister Lee wished Kim a success for the summit and expressed hope that the US-North Korea meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and the larger region.

Plans for the meeting almost foundered after Trump abruptly withdrew in May, citing North Korea's "open hostility" during negotiations. On the US side, Trump was to be joined by Pompeo, chief of staff John Kelly, national security adviser John Bolton and US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, along with a few others.

But analysts who closely watch North Korea believe it is unlikely Kim would have come to Singapore without being confident of the arsenal's security - and the ability to order its use.

South Korea's Hankook Ilbo reported that Singapore recommended the St Regis, which hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping during his 2015 summit with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, because it can be easily secured.

President Trump's first meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will be held one-on-one, according to a White House official.

The president's rhetoric has not mirrored that of his new secretary of state.

Past year the North carried out what was by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched a flurry of missiles - including two over Japan - while Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged US dotard". More recently, Trump has suggested he will raise human rights issues with Kim.

"They may be able to pull rabbits out of a hat that the rest of us conventional diplomats would not have been able to do", he said.

The summit will take place weeks after the U.S. president called it off in May. We will have seen each other. Today, we start with a behind the scenes of the summit.

"I know Singapore is a very hot country, so I wish that our respected marshal stays healthy and comes back in good health".
