Trump to leave Kim summit early as US says talks moving quickly

The White House says Trump will leave Singapore Tuesday, because the talks have "moved more quickly than expected".

"I think it's not a one-meeting deal", Trump said Thursday. Kim's massive security team covered him from all sides, making him barely visible to reporters who were snapping pictures of the "procession".

On the summit's eve, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo drew a firm line, saying the USA plans to keep sanctions in place until North Korea eliminates its nuclear weapons capability.

In another article, the newspaper does not hide its disdain for Trump's "zero prep work" for the meeting and also credits Kim Jong-un as "the real artist" of the summit.

Pope Francis said on Sunday he hoped a forthcoming summit in Singapore between Trump and Jong Un will lead to peace for Korea.

He also told Lee: "We appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and friendship. You're my friend".

It's not clear if he had shipped over the massive bulletproof and fireproof limousine that became a social media sensation when Kim was shown being driven across the border between the Koreas during his first summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in April, with a dozen staunch bodyguards encircling the auto. South Korea's Hankook Ilbo reported that Singapore recommended the St. Regis, which hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping during his 2015 summit with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, because it can be easily secured.

Mr Lee confirmed that Singapore will spend about S$20 million on the summit, with security costing half the figure. Singapore residents lined downtown streets to watch Trump's armoured vehicle, dubbed The Beast, travel from the Shangri-La hotel.

Angry Trump Tweets Targeting Trudeau Spoils G7 Harmony
Trump is issuing a stern warning to foreign countries not to retaliate against USA tariffs on the imports of steel and aluminum. A few hours earlier , Trudeau had told reporters that all seven leaders had come together to sign the joint declaration.

The cost of hosting around 2000 worldwide media was put at $S5 million, but Lee said the publicity and boost for Singapore's global standing was worth it.

Mr Trump flew into Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base aboard Air Force One, arriving just hours after Mr Kim. On the amount spent, Mr Lee said: "We are willing to pay and it's our contribution to an worldwide endeavour which is in our profound interest".

As Trump was trying to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies, withdrawing from the G7 joint communique, escalating a trade fight and launching blistering criticism against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following the summit in Quebec on the weekend. Entry to their hotels is extremely restricted.

Bitcoin struggled near two-month lows after South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Coinrail said it was hacked over the weekend, raising concerns about security at small- to mid-sized virtual currency exchanges.

He added in addition to using bulletproof vehicles, North Korea's security detail would likely deploy layers of protection surrounding the summit venue and try to divert attention from Kim Jong Un's auto whenever he moves. They believe Kim's latest engagement is aimed at getting the United States to ease the crippling sanctions that have squeezed the impoverished country. Now North Korean officials will nearly certainly emphasise preventing any sudden mishaps in Kim Jong Un's first visit to a foreign country other than China or South Korea since taking power, said Kim Doo-hyun, professor of protection politics at Korea National Sport University.

As Trump and Lee sat down for a working lunch at the Istana house, Trump sounded optimistic, telling Lee, "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely". A second round of meetings has been planned for the afternoon as officials worked to lay the groundwork for progress to be made Tuesday, according to the official familiar with the preparations.

The summit's venue is the Capella hotel on Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with luxury hotels, a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches. The move was in reaction to North Korea's criticism of U.S. vice president Mike Pence's statement that the country could meet the same fate as Libya if it failed to meet a nuclear deal with the US. But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

He has said the talks would be more about starting a relationship with Kim for a negotiating process that would take more than one summit.
