Activists Attempt Last Ditch Effort to Save Net Neutrality - Hit & Run

The Federal Communications Commission rollback of net neutrality went into effect today. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai championed the move while commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel opposed

"The United States has a specialized telecom agency with the expertise and technical capability to protect net neutrality and ensure an open internet", FTC Commissioner Terrell McSweeny had said.

Pai says that by deregulating the internet service provider industry, there will now be "strong consumer protections" and that "entrepreneurs [will get] the information they need as they develop new products and services".

Several states are rushing to pass new net neutrality laws to replace the FCC rules.

The Federal Communications Commission's order to roll back President Obama-era net neutrality protections goes into effect Monday.

"Net neutrality ensures equal access to online content regardless of who is providing or requesting information", Florian Schaub, an assistant professor at the University of MI who specializes in internet privacy, wrote in a paper recently published in the academic journal Media and Communication. Chances are they were saying that to make it more likely that the FCC's rules would be repealed, or so they could support a bill with much weaker regulations and perhaps even some benefits for the ISPs.

But the FCC's outgoing rules already allowed broadband providers leeway to create special data channels for such services where the net-neutrality provisions wouldn't apply. But they aren't prevented from doing so. Consumer advocates are concerned that internet providers plan to extend prioritization to the internet.

Net neutrality repeal - is it the end of the world?

A coalition of pro net-neutrality organizations has named Monday, June 11, as "Neutrality Action Day", and they're encouraging members to spread their messages on social media and contact their local representatives in the House. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said he wants to return to a "light-touch" regulatory framework for the internet and is kicking authority to police broadband companies over to the FTC.

Q. What's net neutrality, again? But the push is unlikely to succeed: while a vote in the Senate has put pressure on the House, the larger Republican majority in House is likely to keep things from going any further.

There is also 5G internet being rolled out later this year that will bring new wireless home internet options. Congress is still fighting to uphold net neutrality, and states continue to find ways to enact their own laws regarding the controversial regulations. But what's more likely to occur are subtle changes to your Internet experience that you may or may not notice.

"They will have the right to discriminate and favor the Internet traffic of those companies with whom they have pay-for-play arrangements and the right to consign all others to a slow and bumpy road", Rosenworcel added.

Washington and OR have gone farther, and passed laws that require all ISPs within their borders to offer net neutrality protections.
