Iran Urges North Korea to ‘Keep Vigilant’ When Dealing with Trump

President Trump walked with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sentosa Island on Tuesday

Moon Seong Mook, a former South Korean military official, said Trump's comments on the drills confirmed what many in South Korea had feared all along - that North Korea would attempt to drive a wedge between Washington and Seoul and gain substantial concessions from an unconventional USA president who thinks much less of the traditional alliance than his predecessors.

Following his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Trump said at a press conference that he will stop "war games" with the South, calling them "provocative and expensive".

The vice president "didn't say this at the Senate lunch today", she said of Gardner's remarks.

"I was shocked when he called the exercises 'provocative, ' a very unlikely word to be used by a US president", the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because it was a politically sensitive issue.

The president left Singapore after the two leaders signed a document stating Pyongyang would work toward "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Former Trump adviser and Fox News contributor Sebastian Gorka ― who called North Korea an "evil, evil regime" less than a year ago, called the summit "stunning, absolutely stunning". But, Koreans are anxious they could be affected by the summit discussion. He added that the issue requires consultations between the allies.

He called the drills "provocative", and said ending the exercises will also save the USA money. "Was he committing to end all military exercises or was he committing to end just the most provocative ones?"

North Korea has called for an end to the exercises as part of the United States' ending its "hostile policy" toward the country.

Exercises with South Korea cover a range of eventualities, including drills with nuclear-capable bombers. Cory Gardner told reporters that they were assured joint military exercises would continue.

Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said it was "troubling" that Trump had agreed to suspend joint drills without making any reference to North Korea dialling back its conventional military threat.

"What is most troubling about all this is that the US gave up something tangible, namely, US-RoK military exercises, in exchange", he added, using the abbreviation for South Korea's official name.

In fact, Trump and Kim's agreement made no mention of North Korea's human rights abuses, and Trump said following the summit that Kim "loves his people".

However, it was only in 1992 that the United States and North Korea rekindled diplomatic.
