Trump Tweet Helps Sink Mark Sanford In South Carolina Primary

John Warren and Henry Mc Master head to runoff

Arrington is a state representative.

President Trump tweeted his endorsement of Katie Arrington roughly three hours before polls closed in SC. One of her ads said "it's time for Mark Sanford to take a hike - for real this time".

Sanford, the former SC governor, had never lost an election before Tuesday, even after a high-profile extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina.

Mark Sanford became the second member of Congress to lose re-election after he was ousted by a fellow Republican in a primary Tuesday in his coastal South Carolina House seat.

Arrington narrowly defeated Sanford after Trump tweeted that Sanford had been unhelpful, adding, "He is better off in Argentina".

However, given Sanford was able to make a comeback, but not survive his attacks on President Donald Trump, Scarborough deemed GOP primary voters to be a "Trumpist cult".

Since then, Sanford has accused Trump of fanning "the flames of intolerance", criticized Trump's use of the word "shit-hole" to describe some third world countries, and most recently called the president's plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports "an experiment with stupidity".

Sanford conceded the race late Tuesday and commented on Trump's tweet.

Governor McMaster obviously very excited about moving on to a runoff for the Republican nomination for governor, "Thank you for coming out.we're just getting started".

Despite having no release date in sight and so many unanswered questions, we couldn't be more excited to dive into this world. Normal procedure for these kinds of things - you announce a game and then shut up, roll up your sleeves, and go to work.

"There's a temptation, given the American public's frustration with the political system, .to throw the baby out with the bathwater, and 'let's discard all these institutions that have served us incredibly well for 200+ years, '" Sanford said. In both cases, the races for what once were relatively secure Republican seats now are rated as toss-ups by the non-partisan Cook Political Report.

Corey Stewart, a combative conservative Republican and immigration hardliner who almost upset Ed Gillespie for the party's gubernatorial nomination past year, won the right to face Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, the 2016 vice presidential candidate, in November's U.S. Senate election in November. He is MIA and nothing but trouble.

'She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. He later admitted that he had in fact traveled to Argentina to meet a woman with whom he was having an extramarital affair.

Their bigger worry, though, is how Stewart's presence on the ballot could lead Republican voters to stay at home, hurting the party in several competitive House races. He is better of in Argentina. In his remarks Tuesday night, he said: "I stand by every one of those decisions to disagree with the president". He says candidates realized this time around they needed to look outside of the major cities to secure those votes.

Dimitri Cherny is also running.

State coordinators who I spoke to a few minutes ago say they expected it to be a little more competitive at the top of the ticket.

The race is perhaps the most closely watched matchup in Tuesday's slate of primaries, which also include Virginia selecting a Republican to take on Democratic Sen.

In Virginia, a state legislator favored by the Virginia Democratic Party establishment won a crowded battle for the right to challenge one of the most endangered congressional Republicans in November's elections. Heidi Heitkamp. She is seeking re-election in a state Trump carried by 36 percentage points in 2016.
