After compromise, May set to avoid defeat in parliament on customs

It followed a meeting of the backbench 1922 committee this evening ahead of a series of crunch Commons votes in which Mrs May told MPs to consider the signal that would be sent to Brussels if the government was defeated.

However, May's decision to refuse to offer MPs a veto means the future of her Brexit legislation and her authority as prime minister are now once again back in doubt.

Leading pro-EU Conservative Dominic Grieve said the compromise "cannot be accepted".

Solicitor General Robert Buckland later said leaving with a no deal and trading under World Trade Organisation rules would be inconsistent with Government policy on the Northern Ireland border.

Sarah Wollaston, who is also unhappy with the current state of the government's flagship Brexit bill, claimed a compromise agreed with ministers had "acquired a sneaky sting in the tail" by the time it was formally tabled.

MPs overturned six further amendments inserted into key legislation by peers.

He added: "I have not lied, certainly not".

While there may be "political consequences" from the vote promised under the amendment, "this particular approach does not tie the hands of the Government in the way that the original amendment that was proposed by Dominic Grieve and others did".

Theresa May has been accused of reneging on a deal struck with MPs to avoid a game-changing Government defeat over Brexit.

Grieve's proposal also suggested if no deal was reached by February 15, the government would be required to allow the House of Commons to set the terms of the deal.

Sylvester Stallone sexual assault claim investigated by prosecutors

MPs reversed a move to retain the UK's EEA links after it leaves the European Union next year, which had been backed by the House of Lords, by 327 votes to 126.

While in the end, only two Tory MPs - Ken Clarke and Anna Soubry - voted against the government, there were clashes over how much of a say Parliament should get as the United Kingdom leaves the European Union, with one side accusing the other of trying to "wreck" Brexit - and being accused in turn of being "zealots" who wanted to sideline Parliament.

Pro-EU Tories were quick to voice their anger.

A Department for Exiting the European Union spokesman said: "The Brexit Secretary has set out three tests that any new amendment has to meet - not undermining the negotiations, not changing the constitutional role of Parliament and Government in negotiating global treaties, and respecting the referendum result".

"Would be amusing if only it wasn't such a serious issue, Preventing the most destructive Brexit matters to the majority in Parliament".

A statement from the Brexit ministry said the government had agreed to "look for a compromise".

Tom Brake, the Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesman, said: "It appears Theresa May has been caught red-handed making conflicting offers to Tory rebels and hard-right Brexiters".

Before the vote, she assured lawmakers she would honour her promise and deal with the "concerns raised about the role of parliament in relation to the Brexit process".

She added: "I can not countenance parliament being able to overturn the will of the British people".
