120 countries at UN condemn Israel over Gaza violence

United Nations condemns excessive Israeli force against Palestinians

He said a recent U.N. General Assembly resolution blaming Israel for the Gaza violence "shows that the marches of return and breaking the siege revived the Palestinian issue and imposed the issue on the global agenda". "The global community needs to rip up the old playbook, where Israel conducts investigations that mainly whitewash the conduct of its troops and the USA blocks worldwide accountability with its Security Council veto, and instead impose real costs for such blatant disregard for Palestinian lives".

The statement was issued Wednesday ahead of an emergency U.N. General Assembly meeting to vote on a resolution condemning Israel's "excessive use of force".

Arab countries backing the measure turned to the General Assembly after the United States used its veto in the Security Council to block the resolution on June 1.

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip held Friday prayers for the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr on the tense border with Israel, but plans to set massive brush fires inside the Jewish state did not materialize.

This view was echoed by Israel's Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon, who said, "Thanks to the combined efforts with our American friends and our allies from around the world, we proved today that the automatic majority against Israel in the United Nations is not destiny and can be changed".

At least 130 Palestinians have been killed and 13,900 others wounded by Israeli forces over the past few weeks, according to the latest figures released by the Gaza Health Ministry. It is totally one-sided.

The Israeli military has said its soldiers adhere to the rules of engagement to defend Israeli civilians and security infrastructure from attacks cloaked by the protests. "That's why we're here today". The assembly voted on the amendment, accepting it by a vote of 62 in favor, 58 opposed and 42 abstentions, but the General Assembly president refused to add the amendment to the resolution arguing that it required the approval of a two-thirds majority.

"We need protection of our civilian population", Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian envoy to the United Nations, said at the General Assembly's emergency session prior to voting. He warned ambassadors that by supporting the resolution "you are empowering Hamas".

Qatar's rulers have strong ties to Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement that runs Gaza but which is considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union. That being said, an "international protective mechanism" would have to be approved by the Security Council, where the U.S. has veto power.
