Excessive Heat Warning for Twin Cities metro

Storm threats today

St. Louis and surrounding areas will have to deal with unsafe heat through the Father's Day weekend into early next week. Thankfully, the dew points remain on the comfortable side, making for more of a "dry" heat as opposed to excessive heat, which will be knocking on our doorstep by Monday.

With record high temperatures and dew points in the 70s, unsafe heat index values in excess of 105 degrees are expected Sunday. We'll likely have some high clouds OFF of storms to our northwest during the day Saturday before we become plain old hot, hazy, and humid Sunday and Monday.

In the coming days, the city is going to be hotter than the surrounding suburbs because of the "urban heat island effect", the weather service said on its Twitter page.

As mentioned, Father's Day will begin the big warm up. All of the sunshine, heat, and humidity will cause some places to feel near 100 degrees. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a risky situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Later in the day, we will see a chance of showers or storms arrive by sunset.

Winners and losers as Denmark narrowly beat Peru 1-0
Peru looked the better team and will rue the many chances they missed, particularly Christian Cueva , who blazed a penalty over the bar.

Monday: Scattered thunderstorms late.

There's no way to pinpoint where a single storm will develop on any given day, so we use a combination of (1) confidence that storms will develop and (2) expected coverage in the forecast area.

Another round of locally strong storms today will be followed by quieter weather over the weekend.

I'll have more details on next week's rain chances, all morning on Kansas Today and again on KSN News at Noon!
