Frustrated Mickelson swats moving ball with putter at Open

Phil Mickelson's 48th birthday took a stunning turn at the US Open on Saturday when he stopped a putt from rolling off the 13th green.

Meanwhile, Mickelson created a firestorm of controversy when he intentionally hit his ball while it was rolling on the 13 green to keep it from rolling down a slope into a more hard location.

"I don't mean disrespect by anybody", Mickelson told Fox.

With the two-shot penalty, he was given a sextuple-bogey 10 on the hole and was 10 over for his round. Then he was like, 'C'mon Beef, what've you got for me?' We just tried to chat away and just get on with it because we were both struggling and we just tried to take our minds off it to be honest. "I took the two-shot penalty, moved on, and there's not much more to say". It's my understanding of the rules. I have had multiple times where I've wanted to do that. And at that time I just didn't feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over. I might have saved a shot doing it the way I did.

Sri Lanka captain charged with ball tampering
For West Indies, only opener Devon Smith and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich posted scores of substance, 61 and 55 respectively. But the home side was all out in quick succession after tea for 300, a lead of 47 on the first innings.

Phil Mickelson has sparked controversy at the US Open by striking a moving ball in a breach of golfing etiquette, with Australian Steve Elkington leading the criticism. Mickelson shot even par on the first three holes and birdied the par-4 fourth hole, putting him at 5-over for the championship.

Already four over for his third round, Mickelson missed a poor putt on the 13th for bogey. And I had- you know, it's a fun birthday. "I don't mean it disrespectfully". And as I said, it was one unusual moment.

"If someone is offended I apologise but toughen up", Mickelson said. You always want to use them in your favour. "The last time I saw something like that was John Daly at the '99 [U.S.] Open at Pinehurst".

You can see the initial putt here. "I enjoy the challenge of this because we don't get to see it but once a year and sometimes it gets a little goofy sure. I said I'm sorry, but I've got to laugh at this", Johnston said.
