MPs move to condemn man who blocked upskirting bill

The justice department have said they will support the bill

An attempt in the United Kingdom parliament to make upskirting a specific criminal offence was blocked by a Tory MP this afternoon, as shouts of "shame" rang out in the House of Commons.

Ms Martin's campaign won mass cross-party political support and widespread public support.

Frazer had called upskirting "a ugly invasion of privacy which leaves victims feeling degraded and distressed".

Sir Christopher has yet to speak out about his intervention, but upskirting victim Gina Martin - who started the campaign for the new law - said he told her he objected "on principle" because it "wasn't debated".

It means the Bill will have to return for another Friday Private Members Bill session, on July 6, if it is to have any hope of becoming law this Parliamentary term.

Martin said she remained positive, though, and that she and her lawyer had organised a meeting with Chope to discuss the bill.

"By condemning this form of abuse, we can send out the powerful message that upskirting is unacceptable and perpetrators of this crime will be held to account".

Portugal, Spain good to go, says Onigbinde
Portugal loudly complained Costa had fouled Pepe, and replays showed there was contact by the Spaniard's arm with Pepe's body. Ronaldo made a nice stepover move to get past Fernandez, his Real Madrid teammate, and was fouled at the edge of the area.

"While we are disappointed this Bill did not pass second reading today, we look forward to supporting these measures through the House at the earliest possible opportunity".

Although the legislation had been endorsed by the government, as it was a bill introduced by a backbench lawmaker, a single objection like Chope's was enough to block it. But again, just one dissenting voice would put a stop to its progress.

Moments after blocking the upskirting Bill, Sir Christopher also opposed Finn's Law, Government-backed plans to give police dogs and horses extra legal protections from attack, and also talked out attempts to reform mental health units.

A plan by the United Kingdom parliament to ban taking photos up women's skirts without their permission was blocked at the last minute by one Conservative lawmaker who refused to support the law.

The new law would bring the punishment for upskirting in line with other existing voyeurism offences, and will see offenders face a maximum of two years in prison.

The practice is already illegal in Scotland. Simon Clarke said: "Chris Chope has embarrassed himself with his actions in parliament today and does not speak for me or Conservatives on the disgusting issue of upskirting".
