SNP: Mundell should quit after Brexit ‘power grab by backdoor’

Murdo Fraser

Mr Blackford was suspended for the day's session after refusing to sit down when ordered by the Commons speaker, John Bercow.

"They are now acting outwith the support of the Scottish people".

She explained why the SNP had opted to leave the Chamber during Prime Minister's Questions. It is a power grab and the MPs from Scotland were not given even the courtesy of debating it last night.

"Like the party's extraordinary membership surge of 2014, joining the SNP has become a powerful symbol and the best way of ensuring Scotland's voice is heard".

Mr Blackford said the SNP would take the Government on "every way" including through parliamentary devices.

The SNP can not stand by while Scotland's voice is silenced, while our Parliament is undermined and our devolution settlement - which Scotland overwhelmingly voted for - is put at risk.

His response has led to calls for his resignation with Mr Blackford saying he "should be there to defend Scotland's interests and he has sat back and did nothing to defend the interests of the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish people, he should be utterly ashamed of himself". The Conservatives have returned to where they were before in acting in a manner which is anti-Scottish.

Blackford had sought an immediate vote to have the Commons heard in private, complaining that little more than half an hour had been given over to debating the devolution amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill last night.

SNP MPs stormed out in solidarity with their leader and shouted at the Speaker.

Glasgow School of Art fire: historic Mackintosh building devastated by blaze
The Scottish First Minister stated: "Once again, we are indebted to the bravery of our firefighters and other emergency services". Nearby buildings that could be at risk from the fire have been evacuated as a precaution, the fire service said.

She tweeted: 'The Tories couldn't have made it any clearer today that they have no respect for @ScotParl.

He added: "Disappointed, if not surprised, that if they really felt so strongly about it, they chose a stunt over holding the government to account".

Shadow Scotland Secretary Lesley Laird said: "Today's stunt by Ian Blackford and his colleagues simply emphasises further that they have one aim - to play political games rather than standing up for Scotland".

RELATIONS between the Westminister and the SNP have reached a new low following a mass walkout during Prime Ministers Questions.

Mr Blackford yesterday accused the Tories of "obstructing devolution".

Turning to the speaker, he said: "Under the circumstances, given the disrespect shown, I have got no option but to ask that this House sits in private".

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon has said she was "right behind" Blackford and accused Westminster of treating Scotland with "contempt". Never again will the line that Scotland is an equal partner in Westminster system be believed.

"We have not been allowed to raise our voices in Parliament".
