Taxi crashes into pedestrians on Moscow sidewalk; 8 injured, driver detained

Eight people, two of them Mexican, have been injured after a taxi mounted the pavement close to Red Square in Moscow.

Emergency services raced to the scene this afternoon after the driver "lost control of the vehicle", Moscow Police have said.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin also said on Twitter that the driver "lost control" of the vehicle in what he called an "unpleasant incident".

Police initially said eight people were injured, but later said seven had sought medical attention.

Argentina took on Iceland at the Sparatak Stadium in Moscow earlier today. "He was shouting: "It wasn't me".

The driver is reported to have tried to flee the scene, but was arrested by police.

Video of the incident showed the taxi driving slowing in traffic before suddenly accelerating into a crowd of pedestrians on the sidewalk. There are no fatalities but at least one woman has serious injuries although she is not believed to be critical, according to Interfax.

Moscow is one of the 11 Russian cities where World Cup games are being played.

Russian Federation hosts the 2018 FIFA World Cup from June 14 to July 15.
