Trump protests as his former campaign chief is jailed for witness tampering

Hearing on alleged witness tampering could send Paul Manafort to jail while he awaits trial

The move marks a striking, although somewhat expected, turn in the government's long-running case against Manafort, who is facing several financial fraud charges that arose from special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election. Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled that Manafort has violated his pre-trial release and has detained him pending trial, CBS News' Clare Hymes reports.

"This is not middle school", Jackson said while announcing the decision, according to USA Today.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team said last week that they had evidence that Manafort told witnesses in his trial to lie about the work they did for him.

It was not immediately clear when Mr Manafort would be imprisoned or where.

"This hearing is not about politics, is not about conduct of the office of the special counsel".

Instead, the judge had his bail revoked and was ordered to go to jail.

"You have abused the trust placed in you six months ago", she said.

While Judge Jackson said she struggled with the decision, she accused Mr Manafort of treating the proceedings as "just another marketing exercise".

The president addressed Mr. Manafort's case Friday morning, telling reporters that he feels badly for his former campaign chairman."I think a lot of it's very unfair", Mr. Trump said.

Transcend Packaging in Wales, and Huhtamaki in Belfast, will supply the straws for all 1,361 McDonald's restaurants. Only 1% are recycled, largely because they are made of a mixture of polypropylene and polystyrene.

Mueller insists Manafort's case falls within his jurisdiction because of his connection with both the Trump campaign and to officials in Russian Federation and Ukraine.

"Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort, who has represented Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other top political people and campaigns", Trump wrote on Twitter.

President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman is going to jail. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him, which also include obstruction of justice.

He had been confined to that Alexandria, Virginia home since his arrest, and was forced to wear a Global Positioning System monitoring device.

Manafort will remain in jail while he awaits two trials in the next few months.

One important factor that could stand in the way of Manafort's striking a plea deal is Trump's pardon power.

"It's one thing to be a stand-up guy and not cooperate with prosecutors when you're out and about", said Jeffrey Cramer, a longtime former federal prosecutor who spent 12 years at the Justice Department. "I need to give you a heads up about Hapsburg".

In February, he pleaded not guilty to charges of money laundering, illegal lobbying and lying, setting up the first trial to result from Mueller's investigation, due to begin on September 17.

Manafort is accused of money laundering and acting as an unregistered foreign agent of Ukraine as part of a lobbying campaign to help pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych. Kilimnik, whom Mueller's office says has ties to Russian intelligence, could not be reached for comment. Prosecutors argued that Manafort was a "danger to the community".
