At Least 5 Dead After SUV Carrying Illegal Immigrants Crashes - Timothy Meads

Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd says the SUV went out of control at more than 100 miles per hour and overturned on Texas Highway 85, ejecting those inside.

The crash happened in Dimmit County, Texas about 120 miles southwest of San Antonio.

The crash was reported when Border Patrol agents attempted to stop an SUV in Dimmit County, reports said.

The vehicle was carrying undocumented immigrants, though how exactly many is unclear. This includes the driver, who is believed to be a United States citizen.

KABB in San Antonio reported the driver was believed to be a US citizen, and had been transported to a hospital.

Twelve people were ejected from the vehicle.

High-speed chases aren't uncommon in some US states bordering Mexico, as smugglers and others attempt to flee checkpoints and outrun the Border Patrol.

He said the driver, whose name was not immediately released, was known to police as a human smuggler.

Four of the migrants reportedly died at the scene, with a fifth later dying at the hospital. One person died upon arriving at the hospital, he said. The weight of the people causes the vehicle to become unstable and makes it easy for crashes to occur, Border Patrol officials previously told Breitbart Texas.

Boyd said there needs to be a wall built because this is a "real problem" in the area.

In a later interview, Boyd said the auto reached 100 miles per hour before the driver lost control and crashed.

CNN reports they reached out to Yolanda Choates, a spokeswoman for US Customs and Border Protection, but she directed all comments back to the sheriff's department. "This is a ideal example of why our borders need to be secure".
