Audi CEO arrested in Dieselgate probe

Rupert Stadler

"As part of an investigation into diesel affairs and Audi engines, the Munich prosecutor's office executed an arrest warrant against Mr Professor Rupert Stadler on June 18, 2018", the Munich prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The Volkswagen emissions scandal began in September 2015, when the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice of violation of the Clean Air Act to German automaker Volkswagen Group.

A court hearing to determine whether Stadler would remain in jail was ongoing, the company said, adding that it wouldn't comment further due to the ongoing investigation.

Munich prosecutors searched Stadler's private residence last week in their investigation of suspected fraud and indirect improprieties with documents.

Air quality in Delhi beyond severe level for third consecutive day
The Union Environment Ministry says that the situation is likely to remain in Delhi for the next three days. Anti-cyclonic winds from Rajasthan were said to be the reason behind Delhi's air quality decline.

Just last week, Volkswagen agreed to pay a 1 billion-euro fine imposed by German prosecutors for cheating to get around diesel-emissions regulations. The arrest has been made in connection with Audi's parent company Volkswagen's role in emissionsgate (dieselgate). A judge has remanded him in custody.

It said it had installed software in 11 million diesel cars worldwide that could tell when they were being tested and cut their emissions.

The fallout has cost VW more than $30bn to date - the bulk of that sum in the U.S. where, in May, prosecutors filed criminal charges against former VW boss Martin Winterkorn.
