China vows to retaliate as USA imposes fresh tariffs

The Chinese government said it would respond in kind to the U.S. tariffs, which will apply to roughly 1,100 exports and will target China's aerospace, robotics, manufacturing and auto industries. "The United States will pursue additional tariffs if China engages in retaliatory measures, such as imposing new tariffs on United States goods, services, or agricultural products; raising non-tariff barriers; or taking punitive actions against American exporters or American companies operating in China".

Some semiconductor manufacturers with USA headquarters make some chips within China that would be subject to import tariffs as well, including Intel, Micron, and Texas Instruments.

Responding to US President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese imports, Beijing has adopted a 25 percent tariff on 659 American products worth the same amount.

A Reuters analysis of U.S. Census Bureau import data in April showed that there were about 7,600 consumer and industrial goods still available for tariffs with a combined value of $101 billion in which China accounts for 40 percent or less of U.S. imports.

Trump officials said the products to be hit with tariffs include those that benefit from the "Made in China 2025" policy, an effort by Beijing to ramp up aerospace, robotics and other manufacturing industries.

At the daily briefing here, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said, "If the USA side adopts unilateralism and protectionism and damages China's interests, we will respond in the first instance and take necessary measures to firmly safeguard our legitimate rights and interests".

China vowed retaliation, saying the tariffs would harm both countries and the world trade order.

How Harvard limits the number of Asian applicants it accepts
There is also an exhaustive process of reading, review and commentary before the admissions committee votes on each application. Harvard argued that its records should be filed confidentially to protect students and the admissions process.

The back and forth set off a wave of worry among trade experts, economists, and investors.

Some analysts see a strategic move to target goods in marginal USA states that are home to President Donald Trump's base.

"The United States has kept changing its mind and now launched a trade war", the ministry said in a statement to CNN.

The Trump administration's China tariffs spared some finished goods like smartphones and washing machines, while charges on parts and components could drive up costs in the us supply chain. Not included are consumer goods including mobile phones and televisions.

The US says its tariffs on Chinese goods come in response to what it categorises as theft of intellectual property. Within hours of the White House's announcement, the Chinese government issued a statement threatening to "immediately introduce taxation measures of the same scale and the same strength", CNBC reports.

"We may be coming closer to the point that it becomes hard for either side to back down". The tariffs will hit products including aircraft tires and commercial dishwashers.

The United States has already imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.
