Led Coalition Denies Bombing Pro-Regime Position In East Syria

Artillery are seen lined up in the village of Suway'iah, near the Syrian border town of Albu Kamal, on November 10, 2017.

The UK-based war monitor said the strikes killed 40 people.

Syrian state media accused the USA of launching airstrikes against Syrian military targets in the east of the country which caused deaths and injures, though the US military has denied any involvement.

Damascus, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) A drone attack by the US -led global coalition killed today 40 Syrian soldiers and allies and injured 30 in a desert area south of al-Bukamal, northeastern of Deir Ezzor province.

"The strike on Al-Hari produced the highest death toll for regime forces since the February incident", Observatory head Abdel Rahman told AFP.

Israel is behind an attack in Syria that killed dozens, CNN reported Monday, citing a USA official.

Iraq's Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces, the units' umbrella organization, said in a statement that US aircraft late Sunday night fired two missiles that hit a group of its fighters deployed along the Iraq-Syria border to prevent breaches by the Islamic State group.

Col. Sean Ryan, a spokesman for the coalition, said it was aware of the reports but had not carried out any strikes in the area.

"We are aware of the strike near Boukamal, however there have been no strikes by USA or coalition forces in that area", he said.

United States officials have said that many pro-regime militias that are also aligned with Iran operate in the border area between Syria and Iraq.

IS overran large swaths of Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014, declaring an Islamic "caliphate" in areas under its control.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strike was one of the deadliest on forces allied with Syria's government.

Israel, alarmed about the clout of arch enemies Iran and Hezbollah, has pressed Russia, Assad's other key ally, to make sure Tehran does not entrench its military sway in Syria.

According to CNN, Sunday's strike is unlike those normally carried out by Israel, as those attributed to Israel tend to occur in Syria's western region, around Damascus and Homs, and mostly targeting Iran's infrastructure and military presence in Syria.

In an interview last week, Assad called Hezbollah "a basic element" in the war and said "the need for these military forces will continue for a long time".

He said the United States was an occupying power in Syria and that his state supports "any act of resistance, whether against terrorists or against occupying forces, regardless of their nationality".
