Trump orders US military to form ‘Space Force’

President Trump hosts a meeting of the National Space Council at the White House on June 18

"And we are seriously thinking of the Space Force", he said. It also would require the Secretary of the Air Force to increase the number and improve the quality of its civilian and military "space cadre", submitting a report to Congress on its plans by next March. The service would be presumably be responsible for the extensive array of surveillance and communication satellites operated by the US Armed Forces, and more controversially for potential anti-satellite weapons and deterrence.

Saying that he does not want "China and other countries leading us", Trump said space was a national security issue. He said the Space Force will "lead the management of traffic and mitigate the effects of debris in space..."

Some are anxious that the Space Force would duplicate existing efforts.

Trump said he previously proposed the idea as a joke, but wanted to make it clear he was now serious about it.

DOJ Inspector General, FBI Director To Testify Monday About IG Report
James Comey , who led the probe that exonerated Clinton, used his personal email to conduct official business at least five times, in violation of government policy.

Trump said that the Space Force will help revive the United States' space program. "What you're doing is so important, remember - economically, militarily, scientifically, in every way, there's no place like space". "We're going to be the leader by far".

The president mentioned the idea in May during a ceremony at the White House honoring the Army Black Knights college football team. But some, including two Republican members of the House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee, backed the initiative. The committee feels strongly that the USA military has to be better prepared and equipped to dominate in space, Thornberry said. "A big unknown is what you do with the NRO and other agencies that do space things", Harrison noted when I asked him during a phone call today. "Organizational changes don't fix all the problems". "Because we can not get them to sign legislation, we can not get them even to the negotiating table".

A tweet by Sen.

But there was a sceptical reaction from Bill Nelson, the Democratic senator for Florida, home of Cape Canaveral. Some key Democrats oppose the idea, including Florida Senator Bill Nelson, who said via Twitter, "The president told a U.S. general to create a new Space Force as 6th branch of military today, which generals tell me they don't want". "Thankfully the president can't do without Congress because now is NOT the time to rip the Air Force apart". "It is not too late to consider a more careful, thoughtful, conditions-based approach to assess if and when an autonomous military space armed force is the best path forward".
