Trump to talk immigration with House Republicans on Tuesday

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan takes questions from reporters Wednesday following a closed-door GOP meeting on immigration

The House is set to vote on two immigration bills next week - a conservative proposal crafted by Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and a compromise proposal GOP leaders negotiated with moderates and conservatives.

"I need a bill that gives this country tremendous border security", the president said on "Fox and Friends".

The House GOP whip team is expected to count votes for the compromise measure during a 6:30 p.m. vote series Tuesday.

Adding to the confusion, House speaker Paul Ryan had also indicated this week that the president supported holding a vote on the law next week.

If House Republicans actually wanted to put a stop to the Trump administration's inhumane separation of immigrant families, they could both pressure Sessions to reverse his new policy or advance a standalone, one-sentence bill that ends the Justice Department's "zero tolerance" plan with no strings attached.

He then said he "certainly wouldn't sign the more moderate one", which is a House bill that would provide $25 billion in additional funding for a border wall and legal status for migrants who crossed the border illegally as children, including a path to citizenship. Adults who illegally crossed the border could be charged and placed in jail, away from their children.

GOP aides said Trump's remark caught party leaders off-guard, and White House officials did not immediately respond to requests to clarify the president's comment. One is a hard-line measure and the second is a compromise meant to bridge the divide between moderate Republicans and conservatives in the House GOP conference.

Trump then reiterated his long-stated desire to end the diversity visa lottery program, which randomly grants visas to foreigners and their families from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. "I have to have that", Trump said. The White House reiterated Thursday that if the House bill includes all of the president's priorities, he'll back it.

Three hours later, the tweet came.

German media sound alarm after shock World Cup defeat
It was a major milestone for the team. "In the first half we managed to play defensively with a great deal of intelligence. He played his last two club seasons with Mexican team Atlas, where he started his professional career in 1996.

And Bloomberg reports the White House "told lawmakers he misspoke".

"I think what the president is saying is if the Democrats are serious, they'll come together again and try to close these loopholes and get real immigration reform", said White House counselor Kellyanne Conway.

The furore over the separation policy seemed to grow even as Mr Trump planned to meet House Republicans today in advance of voting on immigration legislation that has divided his party.

And Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., a leader of the moderate bloc, said he had made "no final decision yet" on the bill. Both bills have that. Only the compromise bill would open a door to citizenship for young immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children, and ease the separation of children from their parents when families are detained crossing the border - a practice that has drawn bipartisan condemnation in recent days.

There are no limits on how many people can receive that legal immigration status, and critics said it would allow the Dreamers - after they win US citizenship - to petition for their parents to also become citizens. Both bills have that.

Democrats and other opponents of the administration's policy say that case is not the root of the problem, noting that separating families was the exception, not the rule, for most of the two decades since the case was resolved with an agreement called the Flores settlement.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said "it is very biblical to enforce the law".

Bills that would have made similar cuts in legal immigration failed earlier this year in the Senate, suggesting that even if the proposed package gets through the House, it would have a hard path toward ultimate passage.
