‘We will not apologize:’ Homeland Security chief Nielsen defends immigration policy

Nearly 2000 minors split from parents at border in 6 weeks – US

Nielsen's second tweet - specifically saying "We do not have a policy of separating families at the border".

The administration's "zero-tolerance" policy has sparked a backlash from Democrats and condemnation from some Republicans as well, including former first lady Laura Bush, who called it "cruel" and "immoral" in a Washington Post op-ed. "If you don't want your child separated, then don't bring them across the border illegally".

Dr. Colleen Kraft, the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, on Monday told "CBS This Morning" the separation of families at the border amounts to a "form of child abuse".

But images and videos across social media as well as a plethora of well-reported stories have offered substantial evidence to the contrary, relaying stories and even showing tent cities created for undocumented children separated from their families.

While the policy does not explicitly state that children should be taken away from their parents, it effectively requires border agents to force families apart because federal law does not allow police to incarcerate immigrant children.

Trump issued a series of tweets Monday morning blaming Democrats for refusing to agree to changes to immigration law he's demanded and warning the USA otherwise risked repeating what he portrayed as the mistakes of Europe, where he said immigrants have "strongly and violently changed their culture".

"We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Congress is the one that needs to fix this". "And it breaks my heart."Earlier, first lady Melania Trump also weighed in through her communications director Stephanie Grisham".

The Queen and Meghan's first outing together
Another body language expert suggests Markle's behaviour was the result of feeling uneasy without her 'wingman, ' Prince Harry . The schedule also included a visit to open the Storyhouse in the city of Chester, which is a theatre, cinema, and library.

Several prominent Democrats spent Father's Day crisscrossing the Rio Grande Valley in Texas to meet with USA border authorities and tour detention centers for apprehended children, including a former Walmart Inc. store that's been converted into a shelter for nearly 1,500 immigrant boys.

And as many were quick to point out following her tweet on Sunday, Nielsen herself acknowledged the policy that she now claims doesn't exist in an interview with NPR just days after Sessions announced the White House's "zero tolerance" plan.

Nielsen added: "It's not a policy. Change the laws!" he tweeted Monday.

"The Democrats are forcing the break up of families at the Border with their awful and cruel legislative agenda", Mr Trump said on Twitter.

Rep. Joe Kennedy, who traveled to the United States-Mexico border in Texas on Sunday and participated in a protest at a facility where families were being forcibly separated, said Nielsen's statement didn't align with what he heard from local officials.

Moderate Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Jeff Flake demanded answers about the treatment of migrant families in a Saturday letter to the DHS and the Department of Health and Human Services. "That is traumatizing to the children, who are innocent victims".
