Canada votes to legalize recreational marijuana

Canada has voted to legalise cannabis for recreational use

The bill passed in the Senate by a vote of 52-29 on Tuesday.

Osborne says everyone is learning when it comes to legalized cannabis, including government, and he's working to put the best policies forward for the benefit of the province.

Canadian Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, who sponsored the legislation, called the bill's passage a "historic milestone".

It now makes Canada the second country to have a nationwide, legal marijuana market, after Uruguay. "I don't think it is of such importance to warrant an extraordinary intervention".

Harder said their role "demonstrated once again that the Senate has come into its own as an effective, influential and, indeed, indispensable platform in Parliament for the voices of Indigenous Peoples".

"That does not in any way suggest that it's now party time". California, home to one in eight Americans, launched the US's biggest legal marijuana marketplace on January 1.

The legislation was first introduced more than 14 months ago, and it's winning day for Dean. And he suggested that's because they received marching orders from Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer to do everything in their power to delay or block legalization.

Five different Senate committees minutely examined various aspects of the legalization bill, hearing from more than 200 witnesses.

Mr Trudeau posted on Twitter after the decision saying: "It's been too easy for our kids to get marijuana - and for criminals to reap the profits".

Senators last week approved nearly four dozen amendments to C-45. But it rejected 13 amendments.

It is expected to be decided upon by mid-September, meaning retail sales could begin before the end of the year.

In 2017, the Netherlands took a step closer to regulating the wholesale cultivation of cannabis after politicians passed a bill to back legal growing and sale of the soft drug under government control.

The main point of contention was in regard to a Senate amendment to allow provinces the jurisdiction to ban the home cultivation of cannabis.
