Distraught child migrants heard in audio published by ProPublica

But that doesn't mean doing so is good for him.

While top officials have stood by Trump's "zero tolerance" approach, insisting children are being held in humane conditions, criticism has swelled from worldwide rights groups, Christian evangelicals, former U.S. first ladies and the president's own Republican Party. "I think, and this is my opinion, liberals are going to just try to hype up the emotions".

Massachusetts Democrats announced that they have signed on to companion bills filed in the U.S. House and Senate, known as the "Keep Families Together Act", that seek to bar the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from separating children from their parents except in extraordinary circumstances, limit criminal prosecutions for asylum seekers, increase child welfare training and establish public policy preferences for family reunification.

The agency further noted that it only refers to the Department of Justice "those adults who violate the law by crossing the border illegally and are amenable for prosecution".

The administration argues it is necessary to prosecute illegal border crossers to keep them in government custody and make sure they are deported. The measures would also create a path to citizenship for up to 1.8 million young immigrants already in the US who were brought illegally by their parents.

That, however, set in motion a series of consequences that could have been easily foreseen - and in fact were.

Almost 2,000 children were taken from their parents over a six-week period in April and May after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a "zero tolerance" policy when it comes to prosecuting those arrested for illegally entering the country.

The decree does not mandate separation of parents and children, however.

The letter takes direct aim at Trump's argument that Congress is to blame for the separations.

Trump tweeted as the uproar grew over children being seized and separated from their parents as they sneak over the U.S. -Mexico border.

The House is already embroiled in an election-year struggle over immigration legislation that threatens to hurt Republicans in November.

U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III, a Brookline Democrat who attended a rally on the U.S. -Mexico border over Father's Day weekend, meanwhile, spoke out against the Trump administration's policy during a Tuesday morning event at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. "And it can be taken care of quickly, beautifully, and we'll have safety".

Rather than deter illegal immigration, however, it has created a firestorm of controversy and a rebellion among the GOP, especially in Congress. Voters are outraged by the practice, with overwhelming majorities calling it unacceptable.

But activists seized on the symbolism.

Legislation is neither the required nor the likely solution to the Trump administration policy, however.

A chorus of critics - rights groups, Christian evangelicals, former US first ladies and some within the president's own Republican party - are demanding an immediate end to the family separations.

Warren also criticized the White House for not taking action to stop the controversial family separations. Neilsen said past administrations asked immigration agents to look the other way when families crossed the border illegally, but no longer. Government's "zero tolerance" policy That is what Jeff Sessions called the new government policy in April this year.

"They should just give the kids back to their parents". "This becomes a backup proposal", Meadows told reporters at the White House.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader from NY, is adamant that Trump can end the family separations on his own and that legislation is not needed.

House GOP leaders planned to canvas members to see where support is for the version they crafted in hopes of holding votes on Thursday. It's not the first time that this lesson has been taught, either, and one has to wonder whether anyone will learn from it this time.
