U.S. withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson

A year ago too Haley had warned that the USA would pull out of the council if it does not act on the fact that 14 of its member countries including China, Saudi Arabia and Egypt have poor human rights record themselves.

Britain on Monday called on the UN Human Rights Council to end its discriminatory treatment of Israel, joining the United States in criticizing the body for its disproportionate focus on the Jewish State, The Times of Israel reported.

TRT World's Frank Ucciardo brings more from NY.

National Security Adviser John Bolton had opposed the body's creation when he was USA ambassador to the United Nations in 2006.

Dalia Fahmy, who is an associate professor of political science at LIU Brooklyn, shares her analysis with TRT WORLD from NY.

The move, which the Trump administration has threatened for months, came down one day after the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights slammed the separation of children from their parents at the US-Mexico border as "unconscionable".

Leaving the council would would be the latest rejection by the USA of multilateral efforts, including the Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear deal.

Some, like DNC chairman Tom Perez, found it ironic that the USA should make a move as thousands of children sit in cages at the US border, separated from their parents, who are fleeing persecution.

"Other governments will have to redouble their efforts to ensure the council addresses the world's most serious human rights problems".

'Modern Family' Boss, Seth MacFarlane Embarrassed to Work for Fox
There are some indications, however, that the ongoing criticism of Fox News could end up hurting the company's business. On Monday, MacFarlane donated donated $2.5 million to National Public Radio .

It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year.

'But today we need to be honest, ' Pompeo said. Even many who agree with Washington's long standing criticisms of the body believe the United States should actively work to reform it from within, rather than disengaging.

The US could withdraw from arguably the most important human rights body in the world.

"We have no doubt that there was once a noble vision for this council".

The council also sends out independent experts and has set up commissions of inquiry to report on human rights violations in countries including Syria, North Korea, Burundi, Myanmar and South Sudan.

The decision, should it come to pass, would occur after months of talks between the US and other member countries, with the USA critical of agenda items singling out Israel for condemnation over its treatment of Palestinians. "By walking away, the U.S. is turning its back not just on the United Nations, but on victims of human rights abuses around the world, including in Syria, Yemen, North Korea and Myanmar". Its resolutions are not legally binding but carry moral authority.

The US is expected to disengage with the UN Human Rights Council over anti-Israel bias, a senior US official, a diplomatic source and several activists tell CNN.

The United States refused to join the body when it was created in 2006, when George W. Bush was in the White House and his ambassador to the UN was John Bolton - now Trump's UN-skeptic national security advisor. Now a two-thirds majority vote by the 193-member U.N. General Assembly is needed to suspend a member state.

In March 2011, the UN General Assembly unanimously suspended Libya's membership in the council because of violence against protesters by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. But UN officials said no member has withdrawn.

Haley threatened the pull-out past year, citing longstanding USA complaints that the council is biased against Israel.
