Supporters of Trump Steadfast Despite Immigration Uproar

Trump Announces He Will Sign Executive Order To End Family Separations At Border

The administration has consistently said that it was forced to separate families because of a court case known as "the Flores Settlement". Neither, though, did it require parents to be kept in detention, apart from their children.

Addressing Mr. Trump, Vice President Mike Pence spoke publicly on the issue for the first time at the meeting, ultimately echoing Mr. Trump's call for Congress to address family separation by a more permanent means.

Because federal immigrant detention centers are not thought to be large enough to hold all of the new detainees, the Trump executive order calls on the USA military to provide any existing facilities, and construct more facilities if necessary, to house detainees. Administration lawyers will petition a Los Angeles-area federal court to modify that settlement and allow kids to be detained for longer with their parents.

Ryan said House leadership is not considering a narrower measure that would only address the family separation crisis, as some members of the chamber have advocated.

Asked about the issue Wednesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he would "respond, if requested", adding, "We have housed refugees". We are also going to count on Congress, obviously, but we are signing an executive order in a little while.

The order also said DHS can construct new housing facilities. But as The Washington Post reports, few people are predicting either House measure will pass.

On Monday, the ProPublica website published an audio clip of children many of crying so hard that it sounded as if they could "barely breathe".

But the measure, combined with the flow of unaccompanied minors attempting to cross the border illegally, has prompted a surge in the number of children in U.S. shelters. "Reunification is always the ultimate goal of those entrusted with the care of [unaccompanied children], and the administration is working towards that for those [unaccompanied children] now in HHS custody".

In 2015, a federal judge in Los Angeles expanded the terms of the settlement, ruling that it applies to children who are caught with their parents as well as to those who come to the U.S. alone.

On South Texas' border with Mexico, Manuel Padilla, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol's Rio Grande sector, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the current situation for migrant children in the U.S.

What's the reaction to the executive order?

The executive order marks a major change for the president and his administration.

But the reversal, which could face a legal battle, likely won't apply to the more than 2,300 children who have already been separated from their parents, the Department of Health and Human Services said.

"There will not be a grandfathering of existing cases", Kenneth Wolfe, a spokesman for the department's Administration for Children and Families, told The New York Times on Wednesday. "Let's be clear: Trump is making a crisis of his own creation worse".

Some on the right are equally dismayed. Once the party of compassionate conservatism under President George W. Bush and a party that supported a massive immigration bill under President Ronald Reagan, members admit immigration has grown more and more contentious and less and less a topic they want to debate openly on the floor.
