Canada to announce marijuana legalization date soon

During Question Period Wednesday afternoon, Justin Trudeau confirmed that Canadians can expect a full roll-out of legalization October 17, 2018 - several months after the projected July 1 date, but far sooner than some Canadians expected.

Marijuana legalization has overcome its last hurdle and we'll see legal pot sales in eight to 12 weeks as all that's left is for the provinces to get ready for the sale and distribution of cannabis.

Canada has passed a bill to legalise recreational marijuana - the first G7 nation to do so. As detailed in a recent DPA report, From Prohibition to Progress: A Status Report on Marijuana Legalization, the evidence so far shows that legally regulating and controlling marijuana has enabled USA states to successfully set safety standards, restrict youth access, and enact regulations that limit the potential harms of marijuana use. Marijuana will also not be sold in the same location as alcohol or tobacco.

Still, Wilson-Raybould stressed that pot remains illegal in Canada until the new law goes into effect in October.

"And therefore we do not want to encourage in any way people to engage in that behaviour until the law is changed".

Until then, Wilson-Raybould said: "I would like to also remind the public that driving while impaired by drugs is, and will remain, illegal".

"At some level, we know that spending more than half of your waking hours intoxicated for years and years on end is not increasing the likelihood that you'll win a Pulitzer Prize or discover the cure for cancer", Jon Caulkins, a drug policy expert at Carnegie Mellon University, told Vox.

Pompeo told the same Cabinet meeting Kim had made a personal commitment, and added: "He has got his reputation on the line". National emergency against N Korea was first imposed on June 26, 2008.

Bill Morneau, Canada's finance minister, said that he expects the government to rake in almost 300 million Canadian dollars from the taxes on legalized cannabis.

"Cannabis for non-medical use is not legal yet".

Recreational marijuana sales in Canada could be worth $3.3 billion by 2027.

The proposed legislation allows adults in Canada to legally possess and use up to 30 grams of dried cannabis in public, as well as cultivate up to four cannabis plants at home and prepare products for personal use.

However, other specifics, such as implementation (government-operated or private industry), the eligible age of purchase (likely 18 or 19) and home cultivation rules were all be decided on by each specific province and territory.

The Federal Government has set a date for the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Morgan Fox, a spokesman for the National Cannabis Industry Alliance in the US, said Canada's legalization should also serve as a wake-up call south of the border. In the neighboring U.S., nine states and the District of Columbia have legalised marijuana.
