Explosion rocks Zimbabwe president's rally

Explosion At Zimbabwe Stadium Where President Mnangagwa Addressed Rally

However, the President's spokesman said the head of state was successfully evacuated.

Footage circulating on social media showed an explosion and plumes of smoke around the president as he descended stairs from the podium at the White City Stadium.

He had visited "several" people wounded in the attack in hospital, he said in comments on Facebook.

The as yet unexplained explosion occurred just after President Emmerson Mnangagwa had finished addressing a campaign rally at the venue.

This is now a police issue but the president is safe at Bulawayo State House.

Mr Mnangagwa, who has joked about multiple attempts on his life, said he was used to them by now. Vice President Kembo Mohadi had leg injuries, while Constantino Chiwenga, a second vice president and the former military commander, had bruises on his face, the report said. "The two senior Government officials are admitted at a local hospital (name withheld.) The Sunday Mail also has it on good authority that several security personnel attached to VIPs are also injured‚" the newspaper reported.

Mnangagwa, a longtime ally whose firing as Mugabe's deputy after a ruling party feud led to the transfer of power, is under pressure to deliver a credible election that western countries see as key to lifting global sanctions.

All 3 Lakers draftees were global players, first time in National Basketball Association history
Another unbelievable aspect regarding all nine of these players is how quickly each of them developed under Beilein. Pelinka did not want to address the talks, saying he wanted to respect other teams with which he has discussions.

Mnangagwa's rise to the presidency was fiercely resisted by Mugabe loyalists, including his wife Grace.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday escaped a blast at a ruling ZANU-PF party rally. Previous Zimbabwe votes were marked by allegations of violence and fraud, and Mugabe banned Western observers, accusing them of bias.

Mnangagwa on Saturday evening appealed to the southern African nation for unity.

Chamisa condemned the attack, tweeting that "violence must have no place in our politics".

"This sours the political environment after it seemed like all parties were taking steps to ensure the election would be free of violence".

"We condemn the attack at the ZANU-PF rally in Byo".

A record 23 people have filed to run for president in the July 30 election.
