Brazil vs Costa Rica, It Remains Goalless at Half

Neymar's roller coaster of a World Cup game ended with Brazil star in tears

Philippe Coutinho and Neymar broke down dogged Costa Rica in injury time, sealing a 2-0 win for Brazil that propels the five-time champions towards the World Cup last 16.

Despite dominating possession, Brazil showed rare leaks in its steady defense, with Costa Rica threatening on a couple of early chances of their own.

Through on goal with just the goalkeeper to beat, Neymar had another chance to put his team ahead, but the former Barcelona forward curled his effort wide from 20 yards.

"Neymar is a very skilled player and it is true we have seen how people have tried to stop him a little aggressively", he said.

Neymar might have finished Brazil's 2-0 win over Costa Rica in floods of tears but global team-mate Gabriel Jesus believes he brings happiness to the world.

Gabriel Jesus had the ball in the back of the goal in the 26th minute, but was deemed offside.

The Brazil squad is arguably stronger at this World Cup in Russian Federation than the one that capitulated as a host nation four years ago.

However, the 26-year-old showed why he is a three-time Champions League victor with a string of stunning saves to deny Neymar and Coutinho.

Though not so much those online - or the ref, after VAR reversed the initial penalty award.

Koepka withstands record-equalling round to defend US Open title
Sometimes the cost of making birdies, sometimes there are some mistakes, which kind of bit me in the butt this week. Koepka fired his tee shot into the thick fescue and needed to drain a terrifying 12-foot putt to salvage a bogey.

Brazil's draw in their opening match means there is no room for error against Costa Rica, and Tite is looking for his side to have a better impact in the final third. In danger of ending in a draw, Brazil seemed nervous but composed itself through the seven minutes of injury time. "He had a knock, but I think it was the first time in three-and-a-half months he played 90 minutes", said Tite. The team is among the top in the world and anything but a victory against Costa Rica would make it harder to advance from the group stage.

His poor performance ultimately sealed his fate in the match as he only played the first half before coach Tite brought in Douglas Costa to take his place.

Tite was unfazed about handing him the armband for a game that he described as a "decisive match that we need to win to continue in the tournament".

"We never tried to hurt him", Ramirez said.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, are out but the Central Americans were far from disgraced here.

Neymar had a running battle with the referee for most of the match.

Silva was captain when Brazil hosted the last World Cup and was heavily criticised for his tears during their penalty shoot-out win over Chile.

This led to Costa Rica being able to go on the counter-attack, but they too were unable to get past the Brazilian defence.

Good day, and welcome to our coverage of the Group E game between Brazil and Costa Rica.
