900000 litres of Alberta crude dumped into Iowa floodwater

Evacuations Ordered For Community Along Northwest Iowa River

The oil has now been contained, but removing all the oil from the water could take months.

According to the Associated Press, officials at the scene believed that the floodwaters were a factor in the derailment, but were unsure whether high water pushed cars off the track, damaged the track in some way, or played some other role. Williams said officials hoped to reach the cars by sometime Saturday afternoon.

Almost half - 100,000 gallons - of the spilled oil has been contained with booms near the site, but some of the crude oil did make its way into the floodwaters and nearby rivers.

The railroad will focus on environmental recovery.

A major part of that work includes building a temporary road parallel to the tracks to allow in cranes that can remove the derailed and partially-submerged oil cars.

Authorities say crude oil is leaking from one or more of 31 tanker cars that have derailed in northwest Iowa.

The train was carrying tar sands oil from Canada to Oklahoma for ConocoPhillips.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds is set to visit the site of an oil train derailment and oil spill in the northwestern corner of the state.

Andy Williams, the spokesperson for BNSF, says that 14 out of 32 of the derailed train cars spilled the oil into the flood waters. In the meantime, the city is getting its water from the nearby Rock Valley Rural Water system, which Olson says is not in danger of being contaminated by the spill. ConocoPhillips spokesman Daren Beaudo said each tanker can hold more than 25,000 gallons (20,817 imperial gallons) of oil.

Rock Valley, just southwest of the derailment, shut off its water wells within hours of the spill. The river rose rapidly after 13 to 18 cm of rain fell in the days prior to the derailment.

The spill threatened to contaminate drinking water for residents about 150 miles (240 km) downstream in Omaha, Nebraska.

Metropolitan Utilities District said it was monitoring pumps it uses to pull drinking water from the Missouri.

The city, with a population of almost 3,400, will stay on the rural water system until testing by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources confirms the safety of the city's drinking water, Olson said.
