Spain held by Morocco but Iago Aspas goal ensures they face Russian Federation

Iago Aspas flicked home a late equaliser for Spain

In Kaliningrad, they dominated possession - having more than 75% of the ball - and had 18 shots to Morocco's six.

Aspas spared Spain's blushes and secured their place at the top of the group, but Isco says they should be concerned about the way they are starting games in particular.

Morocco showed plenty of attacking intent in the contest and led twice through Khalid Boutaib and Youssef En-Nesyri.

"We were a bit doubtful at the start of the game, once again", Isco said.

The North Africans finished bottom of Group B with one point but were unlucky not to end their campaign with a memorable win against Spain, after substitute Iago Aspas scored in stoppage time to equalise for the 2010 world champions.

Spain, as if stirred into action, suddenly began to play as only they can, culminating in an equalizer born on the fields of La Masia - the name of Barcelona's youth academy - and finished by Isco, the star of the team's next generation.

Morocco coach Herve Renard Sunday said his team had been victim to a "total injustice" in becoming the first nation knocked out of the World Cup before their final Group B clash with Spain.

The 27-year-old has come on for Iniesta in the previous two group games and has impressed in his cameo roles.

The fightback could prove crucial in Spain's quest to regain the World Cup.

Mexico defeats South Korea, close to 16
Midfielders Giovani dos Santos and his younger brother Jonathan dos Santos play for the Galaxy and forward Carlos Vela for LAFC. They are on an eight-match winless run at World Cup finals but coach Shin Tae-yong was pleased with the endeavour of his team.

"We managed to come top of our group, and we need to do our homework properly as Russian Federation will be a very tough match".

Spain didn't have to wait long to get back into the match.

Elsewhere in the group, Portugal were forced to settle for a draw against Iran, leaving Spain to eventually top the standings and establish a last-16 clash with tournament hosts Russian Federation.

The first half was otherwise notable for a number of crunching challenges - Morocco receiving four yellow cards and Spain defender Gerard Pique was perhaps fortunate not to be set off for a two-footed lunge.

"We haven't really won anything yet".

In team news, Thiago Alcantara is expected to replace Andreas Iniesta in central midfield and the Bayern Munich player could have a telling impact against Morocco. "We needed them to score on us to force us to react".

The result, combined with Portugal's 1-1 draw against Iran, sees Spain through to the round of 16 as group winners because of total goals scored and will now face Russian Federation in the knockout round. Spain had hit back through Isco before Aspas struck late on.

When they regained possession they broke with pace and objective, and almost took the lead after 55 minutes when Noureddine Amrabat's right-foot scorcher from distance cannoned off the crossbar.
