U.S. to Present North Korea with Timeline Outlining Specific Requests

Donald Trump- North Korea news

Kim's cancellation of the tradition follows President Trump's decision to halt war games with USA troops and the South Korean military while negotiations to denuclearize the North are ongoing.

"We hope that we will have an ongoing process of making progress", CNN quoted him as saying.

Washington is expected to soon test North Korea's denuclearization commitment by presenting a rapid timeline and "specific asks" of Pyongyang, according to an unnamed senior USA defense official.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said he will not put a timeline on negotiations for North Korea's denuclearization, contradicting a senior defense official who said Washington would soon present a timeline to North Korea with "specific asks".

The North's agreement to hold only a single week of reunions for 100 families, falls far short of what many expected after Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in promised "comprehensive and groundbreaking advancement of inter-Korean relations" in their joint declaration at the end of the inter-Korean summit in April.

"If we can't do that, if it turns out that there is no capacity to deliver the outcome that both presidents said they wanted, yeah, we reassess", he said.

Turks begin voting for president, parliament in crucial test for Erdogan
Pro-Kurdish candidate Selahattin Demirtas tweeted his hopes for a calm election day, urging young people to vote. Supporters of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan attend an election rally in Istanbul , Turkey , June 23, 2018.

He said Washington hoped to achieve major disarmament by North Korea within the next 2-1/2 years, within Trump's current presidential term, which ends on January 20, 2021. The State Department has since said it has no travel plans to announce.

"We have a good chemistry together", Trump said. U.S. recovery efforts in the country were halted in 2005 as tensions heightened between the two countries.

The clampdown was disruptive for many residents in the usually placid city-state of 5.6 million - although some observers said hosting the summit amounted to a PR coup that would ultimately benefit Singapore. "I heard it myself when I visited there as Central Intelligence Agency director, I heard it myself when I visited Pyongyang as Secretary of State and I heard it again where there was a group together with the President and Chairman Kim".

Still, North Korea's handling of the changes and how it presents them to its people remains highly nuanced.
