Iceland sunk by late Croatian goal

For the first time ever Croatia have won three #WorldCup games in a row

Croatia's possession was sterile but, with a draw enough to top the group, it had little incentive, especially as Iceland was pretty toothless until news of Lionel Messi's opening goal reached the stadium.

Croatia clinched its place in the last 16 with a 2-0 win over Nigeria and a statement 3-0 win over Argentina.

Zlatko Dalic's side enhanced their status as one of the form teams in the World Cup, as goals from Milan Badelj and Ivan Perisic proved enough to dispatch a unsafe Iceland side.

Argentina might have been criticised for their point against Iceland but right now it's the only keeping them in the World Cup but the Scandinavians are about to be handed a huge boost with Croatia's team news.

Argentina's 2-1 win over Nigeria means they advance with Croatia from Group D. Croatia will now meet Denmark in the Round of 16 on Sunday 1 July in Nizhny Novgorod, the same venue where they beat Argentina. A Nigeria win would send the Icelanders and Argentinians both home.

"There is too much quality in Croatia", Iceland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said. "We have not played many games like this against a strong team like Croatia and created as many chances as we did", he said. That shows the character of the players; we left everything behind.

Mexico defeats South Korea, close to 16
Midfielders Giovani dos Santos and his younger brother Jonathan dos Santos play for the Galaxy and forward Carlos Vela for LAFC. They are on an eight-match winless run at World Cup finals but coach Shin Tae-yong was pleased with the endeavour of his team.

As expected, Croatia bossed the midfield and Iceland were content to hit on the break, playing with no fear.

Croatia had their first clear chance when Badelj's missile crashed onto the bar six minutes into the second half.

Just before the break, a drive by Alfred Finnbogasson whistled past the post.

Unlike in their first two matches against Argentina and Nigeria where they were more solid at the back, it was Iceland who were on the front foot and had the best of the chances against the Croats.

Sverrir Ingason forced Kalinic to another spectacular save, seconds before his header shaved the top of the bar.

On 73 minutes Bjarnason fluffed a close-range opportunity but Iceland's lifeline arrived a minute later when Dejan Lovren handled a cross by Sigurdsson in the penalty area.
