Microsoft Edge Gets Built-In Ad Blocker On iOS And Android

Microsoft Edge on Android- 5 million downloads

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is apparently serious about creating a great experience for users of its Edge browser on Android and iOS. Microsoft updated its Android mobile browser with the ad-blocker built-in, allowing users to skip the need for a standalone ad-block app on their Android devices.

Joining the likes of Google and Apple, Microsoft has launched Microsoft News, a news engine that curates articles from across the Web and delivers them to users' Microsoft feed, the media reported. Fast forward six months and Microsoft Edge crosses the 5 million downloads mark, an even greater achievement for the Android app. Microsoft has closed beta sign-ups for Edge on Android, but if you're already part of the testing program, you can hop into your settings and enable Adblock Plus beginning today. Mozilla also includes ad blocking in Firefox for Android though the feature is only activated while browsing with in-private tabs. Google previously brought ad blocking to Chrome for Android but the company chose not to block ads as aggressively as Adblock Plus does. It has been installed about five million times from the Google Play Store, compared to 100 million Firefox installs and over one billion of the default Chrome installations. Add to that the fact that Microsoft updates Edge pretty often and you got a great formula for success. With an increasing number of browsers blocking ads natively without intervention from the user, it's hard to see how advertising can maintain current revenue levels.

Instagram video chat and new AR camera effects available today
The For You section is the default, but there are also categories for sports, travel, nature, style, art, music and much more. When a user opens the Explore tab, they'll be now presented with a tray at the top with personalised channels.

A new market opens up for Microsoft Edge, and here it has the opportunity to assert itself as best as it can.

What do you think about the new ad-blocker in Microsoft Edge for Android?
