Apple, Samsung settle seven-year legal battle over design patent infringement

Apple, Samsung settle seven-year legal battle over design patent infringement

The settlement terms were not included in the document, however.

"Plaintiff Apple Inc. and Defendants Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Samsung Electronics America, Inc., and Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC would like to inform the Court that they have agreed to drop and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter", the settlement notice stated.

The settlement ends a patent battle that Apple has waged against Samsung since 2011 over allegations that Samsung violated Apple's patents by "slavishly" copying the design of the iPhone.

The two have taken jabs at each other over the years, with Samsung making fun of everything from the iPhone X's notch to the disappearance of the headphone jack in new Apple devices.

When contacted by AFP for comment, Apple referred to a statement released last month after the jury announced the damages award.

Apple alleged Samsung's Nexus Android phones infringed on Apple's patents, trademarks, user interface and style.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's name has been stripped from a prestigious book award
Critics have highlighted anti-native and anti-black sentiments in Wilder's work for decades, although her books are still published, read and loved by many.

The final amount Samsung will have to play remains undisclosed, so it seems we'll never know how much Apple will get from the long-running case.

In the latest trial, Apple has the burden of proof to prove that Samsung should pay the full $1 billion in damages. "It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple".

The first ruling demanded that Samsung pay Apple roughly $1 billion to close the case, but numerous appeals have since extended the battle to 2018, with Samsung continuously attempting to reduce that number.

The companies also collided in a second and separate 2014 trial in the same court over different patent-infringement claims of different Android phones.

"Dang! I figured the kids I've been raising since this thing started would have time to grow up, go to law school and work on this case someday."

In May, at the retrial in San Jose, Apple won a US$539m award in a jury verdict.
