'Rape, rob or murder': Kiwi charged over United States home invasion

The home was in a remote but pretty part of Richmond Virginia known as Holland Hills

A New Zealand man has been shot by a mother in the United States, after he travelled 13,000 km from Auckland to Richmond, Virginia, where he tried breaking into the house after her 14-year-old daughter stopped talking to him online.

"The only inference is that he had very bad intent", the sheriff says.

The Goochland County Sherriff's Office said they received two separate calls on the afternoon of June 22-one about a shooting and a second from a man reporting his wife had called him about a man dressed in black attempting to break into their home.

This photo provided by the Goochland County Sheriff's Office shows a New Zealand passport photo, of Troy George Skinner. "He didn't listen and at some point in this interaction he picked up the landscape stone, threw it through the glass door, completely shattered it".

He is also expected to be charged with breaking and entering with a deadly weapon, with intent to commit a serious felony, Agnew said. When she saw a man trying to enter her home, she warned him several times she had a gun, Agnew said.

He is reported to have stayed at a hostel in town before purchasing the knife and duct tape at a Wal-Mart and heading off toward the family home.

The Sheriff referred the case to the FBI to determined whether any federal charges are warranted. He had been told in the past this daughter no longer wished to communicate with him. "The lady [who shot Skinner to prevent him from entering] and her family members are the victims".

The mother was in the home with her two teenage daughters as Skinner tried to get in the family's home.

It wasn't immediately known if Skinner has an attorney.

In a press conference, Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew described Skinner's arrival as not welcomed.

After smashing through the door of the home in Goochland, Virginia, he reached in, attempting to unlatch it, before he was shot in the neck by the girl's mother.

It was Skinner's first time leaving the country and he had a passport delivered to Singh's house in January. He fled but collapsed in a nearby yard, where police found him and administered emergency first aid before transporting him to a hospital, where he remains.

They also said they had been in contact with Skinner's family and had offered consular assistance. "This 6-foot-1-inch, 275-pound man attempted to violently get inside her house".

The Goochland County sheriff said Skinner bought a knife and duct tape after his arrival in the U.S. late on Wednesday, and had pepper spray on him.

Skinner then flew from New Zealand to Australia, Australia to Los Angeles, and Los Angeles to Washington D.C. From Washington, he took a Greyhound bus to Richmond. "You should probably be wearing a flack vest, because you're probably going to get shot", Silvester said. But in truth, deputies say, Troy George Skinner had travelled much farther than that.
