Capital Gazette newspaper shooting in Maryland, US, leaves at least five dead

Report Multiple People Shot at Annapolis Newspaper

At least five people died in Maryland on Thursday after a suspect opened fire near the Capital Gazette's newsroom in Anne Arundel County - as journalists covered the terrifying scene inside their building.

Capital-Gazette owner Tronc said it was "deeply saddened" by a shooting at the newspaper's office in Annapolis, Maryland, on Thursday.

"Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees", he said. According to local police, the situation is still active and ongoing. A law enforcement source the suspect initially refused to cooperate. Another official who also spoke on condition of anonymity said investigators identified the man using facial recognition technology.

John McNamara, who's bio page said, "is the editor of the Bowie Blade-News and the Crofton-West County Gazette".

He said that he and others remained hidden under the desks when the shooter stopped firing.

Phil Davis, who covers business and politics, posted a stream of tweets as he waited to be interviewed by police.

"I started praying while he was reloading his shotgun", he said.

Anne Arundel County executive Steve Schuh says the suspect "has not been very forthcoming" with information.

To his credit, Mr Trump did send out one of the patented "thoughts and prayers" tweets he tends to send out when large numbers of people have been killed by the guns he refuses to put any restraints on.

Ramos sued the Capital Gazette in 2012 for defamation, according to an NBC News producer, who reported that his case was thrown out by a judge.

Employees inside the building were evacuated with their hands raised above their heads.

Newspaper staff had dealt with threats in the past and have always been concerned about security, Marquardt said, adding that angry readers in the past threatened the newspaper over who it endorsed for an election.

"Can't say much more and don't want to declare anyone dead", he wrote.

When the news alert of the shootings at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, came across my feed, I wasn't surprised.

"Our law enforcement professionals responded swiftly and I thank them for protecting the public by eliminating the threat and taking the suspect into custody".

Capital Gazette publishes a stable of newspapers in and around Annapolis, home of the U.S. Naval Academy.

"We have injuries. I can't give the extent of those injuries at this point", Anne Arundel Police Lt. Frazier said in a press briefing.

President Donald Trump tweeted in the wake of the shooting that his "thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families". Capital newspaper reporter Pat Ferguson told ABC News he was across the street when he was called by the Baltimore Sun newsdesk warning him not to return to the newsroom.

At the White House, spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said: "There is no room for violence, and we stick by that". Officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and FBI were aiding in the law enforcement response.
