Jimmy Fallon and limits of Apolitical Civility, Trump's latest late-night target

Jimmy Fallon received backlash for the light-hearted conversation and for playfully mussing Donald Trump's hair in 2016

When Colbert learns that Trump called Fallon and Colbert a lost soul and a low life, respectively, he decides a different late night figure better fits those descriptions and dials O'Brien.

The potentially history-making shared sketch kicks off with Colbert working on his opening monologue when he's interrupted by Fallon, who greets him with, "Hey lowlife!".

"I heard he said we're all no-talent, low-life, lost souls", Fallon reported to Colbert.

When Fallon asks if Colbert saw Trump's rally on Monday, the CBS host says: 'Nope'. "If we're not careful, this could start to get ugly", O'Brien said, clearly missing another element of the cultural moment.

At the end of the sketch, Fallon and Colbert agree to grab food at the Red Hen, the restuarant that refused to serve White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

"Honestly are these people amusing?", Trump asked the crowd, earning a resounding "No".

Still, it's jarring to see Trump target the stubbornly apolitical Fallon when he usually reserves his ire for someone like Michelle Wolf or Fallon's ratings rival Stephen Colbert, who make a point of eviscerating his administration. Both Fallon and Colbert used the bit as their cold opens on Tuesday.

"Not so good", Colbert responded bluntly.

"Then I thought, 'Wait, shouldn't he have more important things to do?'" Fallon said to laughs. So when even the mildest of rebukes can provoke a presidential tantrum, you might as well take a stand. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Fallon said it was a "mistake" and that looking back, he'd do it differently.

Fallon had received criticism for his interview in which, apart from imitating Trump, he tousled the Republican candidate's hair and asked few inconvenient questions.

"As you may have heard, last night the President of the United States went after me on Twitter. I don't have his number, I don't want his number", Fallon said during the show. "You say my name three times there and I appear".

The skit came after Trump reignited spats with the late night comedians when he suggested they weren't talented during a raucous rally in West Columbia, South Carolina on Monday night.
