Porsche sets Nurburgring record with 919 Hybrid Evo

Porsche 919 Evo- Timo Bernhard- Nordschleife record lap time

Porsche has broken the overall Nurburgring record with a 5:19.55 minutes time, set by Timo Bernhard in the revamped Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. Time to beat? 6 minutes and 11.13 seconds.

The new time is almost a minute quicker than the old record of 6:11.13 - and the old time did take a while to beat, as it was set by Formula 1 driver Stefan Bellof way back in May 1983. In 1983, Stefan Bellof made it around the Nordschleife with the 620-hp auto in 6 minutes, 11.13 seconds.

The 919 Hybrid Evo is basically an uncorked version of the prototype Porsche took to Le Mans in 2017. The folks over at Bridge to Gantry have been following Porsche's progress with the unrestricted version of its race vehicle in the company's quest to establish a new record for the fastest auto around the 'Ring.

The hybrid powertrain of the 919 has been similarly upgraded to produce a combined 1160hp, with the turbocharged V4 engine making 710hp and an electric motor providing 433hp. This meant ripping out the A/C, windscreen wiper, light systems, and other components.

Flights in and out of Bali cancelled
Ash is unsafe for planes as it makes runways slippery and can be sucked into their engines. Agung has been erupting periodically since it rumbled back to life a year ago .

It also has 50 percent more downforce and active aerodynamics, including Formula 1-style Drag Reduction System incorporated into its rear wing.

Wrestling the auto through all 12.94 miles of track was Timo Bernhard, a five-time victor of the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race and two-time overall victor at Le Mans.

The Nordschleife on its own was used for racing for only a couple of major worldwide events in 1983, the Group C fixture in May and the round of the European F2 Championship the previous month. Porsche confirmed it would not be attempting another record today, but engineers hinted that if the track temperatures were cooler the vehicle could go even quicker.
