Putin-Trump summit set for July 16 in Helsinki

Putin and Trump at G20

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members were anxious that if the summit with Putin had taken place earlier, Trump might have agreed to something with the Russian leader that they would have been forced to go along with.

The two countries announced the details simultaneously a day after striking a deal on holding the meeting following a visit to Moscow on Wednesday by USA national security adviser John Bolton.

"We're looking forward to it".

Trump's manic tweets about Russia/FBI are always a great tell. He said they would discuss Syria, Ukraine and "many other subjects".

"The two leaders will discuss relations between the United States and Russian Federation and a range of national security issues", the White House said, elaborating no further.

The Trump administration has taken actions to punish Putin's regime for these offenses. He has repeatedly praised his authoritarian peer while straining ties with numerous United States' closest allies. Another U.K. official agreed it was hard to know what Trump might say when he met Putin. British diplomats and politicians have struggled to read Trump since he took office, and been repeatedly caught out by him, leaving them wary of what he may do next. He will meet with Prime Minister Theresa May but not receive the lavish state welcome he has enjoyed at stops in other foreign capitals. He said he did not rule out Trump discussing Russian Federation rejoining the G7 to make it the G8 again.

Since coming to power a year ago, Trump has sought to improve relations with Putin amid tensions between Moscow and the West. "If you just look meetings in the past year, the leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Greece, Finland, Austria, Belgium, and Italy have all had bilateral meetings with President Putin", Bolton said.

In addition to accepting Russia's denial, Trump repeated his longstanding attacks against Clinton and James Comey (nearly 600 days since the United States election took place) and the ongoing investigations into Russian interference.

Putin's foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said after Putin's meeting with Bolton that the issue of alleged Russian meddling in the United States presidential election was raised during the conversation, and the Kremlin reiterated its denial of any interference with the vote.

The president's position has put him at odds with US intelligence agencies, a bipartisan consensus in Congress and Trump's own appointees who have all said there is clear evidence that the Kremlin attempted to influence the campaign.

"Trump asked, Putin denied it, and Trump said that was good enough".

Gorbachev was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying Thursday that if Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump make steps toward cooperation, their meeting will go down in history as a major landmark.

The Trump administration's Nuclear Posture Review repeatedly named Russian Federation and its capabilities as justification for adding to US nuclear capabilities (a first, since the end of the Cold War).
