South Korea fans celebrate after beating Germany

Joachim Low

Mexico lost to Sweden 0-3 on Wednesday, but Germany's loss sent Mexico through to the next round.

The four-time winners came to Russian Federation as one of the favourites but became the fourth side this century to lose in the group stage after winning the previous tournament following a 2-0 defeat against unfancied South Korea. We might have just witnessed the moment of the tournament, however.

"We're not going to the last 16, but we did manage to beat the champions and the world number one team", he added.

The defending champions went into the final game of the group stage knowing a win against South Korea would likely see them through to the last-16 if the other result went their way.

Ozil was heavily criticised for his performances at the World Cup.

"Even if it had worked out today it would have been over for us in the knock-out phase in the next game or the game after".

Germany made a nervous start, playing slower than it usually does to avoid being vulnerable on the break.

And Neuer, who only returned from injury in time to captain Germany at this World Cup, insists Die Mannschaft can not dwell on past achievements.

Final Group E games (2018 FIFA World Cup)
Tite was dealt a massive blow minutes into Brazil's last game of their group stage round. "He said he locked up when he was leaving the pitch".

The offside flag was initially raised, but after some discussions between referee Mark Geiger and his team in Moscow, VAR replays showed the ball took a touch off Kroos on the way through, meaning Kim was onside and the goal was given.

A pair of late goals from Kim Young-gwon and Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, combined with a superb display from goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo helped South Korea create one of the greatest shocks in the history of the tournament. And despite the win, South Korea does not advance either.

However, after two late goals from the South Korean side, the Germans will head home early.

The frantic finish continued five minutes later as South Korea added their second. But the strategy did not bring much success in the first half.

Mexico meanwhile thrilled in victories over Germany and South Korea but were overwhelmed by Sweden, who did well to pick themselves up after the demoralizing reverse to Low's side.

"It is a really, really bitter evening for us", defender Mats Hummels told German broadcaster ZDF.

After pressing hard for most of the first half and wasting numerous chances, Sweden finally found the net when left back Ludwig Augustinsson charged up the field in the 50th minute and angled home a left-footed volley.

"We need to analyse this and it has to be said very clearly that we just do not deserve it".
