‘North Korea nuclear programme could be gone within a year’

A Capital Gazette newspaper rack displays the day's front page on Friday

The United States has a plan that would lead to the dismantling of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs in a year, President Donald Trump's national security adviser said today, although USA intelligence reported signs that Pyongyang doesn't intend to fully give up its arsenal.

A source familiar with China-North Korea relations explained that such a request for security carries the implication that "China will clearly support and defend the regime if the dictatorship is shaken by an influx of information and other factors as it implements economic reforms and opens up its economic system".

Joel Wit, a former diplomat who helped the USA negotiate with North Korea including a nuclear agreement between the US and the regime in 1994, said the USA believed the rogue regime had two sites to "enrich nuclear fuel" including Yongbyon and another, but the name of the center was not revealed.

U.S. intelligence has collected evidence pointing to plans by Pyongyang to deceive the West into thinking it has dismantled its nuclear program and push for sanctions relief, the Washington Post reported late Saturday.

When grilled by lawmakers about the specifics of the administration's denuclearization plan for North Korea, Pompeo said he was "not prepared to talk about the details of the discussions that are taking place". The Financial Times reported that Pompeo was due to visit North Korea this week but Reuters has not been able to confirm his travel plans.

USA officials believe that North Korea is working to hide some of its nuclear stockpile and key aspects of its production facilities from the United States, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

Kim agreed to the "complete denuclearization" of North Korea at a summit with Trump in Singapore in June, but the latest activity on certain North Korean sites seems to run contrary to the Kim regime's promises of disarmament.

"We're very well aware of North Korea's patterns of behavior over decades of negotiating with the United States", Bolton said".

"Well, what our experts have devised is a program that with North Korean cooperation, with full disclosure of all of their chemical and biological nuclear programs, ballistic missile sites". -North Korean diplomacy prior to the Singapore summit.

United States intel agencies suspect that Pyongyang has been increasing production of nuclear fuel at multiple secret sites, NBC reported Friday.

Pressure will now be on Pompeo to make progress in negotiations with North Korea to turn the summit declaration into concrete action.

Trump and Kim signed an agreement in Singapore that said North Korea would abandon its nuclear program, but did not specify a timeline or method for doing so.

"I made a deal with him, I shook hands with him, I really believe he means it", Trump explained, then hedged, "Now, is it possible?" "And it is to North Korea's advantage to dismantle very quickly".

"I think they're very serious about it", the President responded.
