Camera Company Light To Produce Smartphones

Light's multi-lens camera tech is coming to a phone

It's not every day that a camera pops up on the market that makes you do a double take, just to make sure that what you're looking at is real.

A Light L16 multi-aperture computational camera, a CES 2018 Innovation Awards victor, is displayed at CES Unveiled Las Vegas, a press preview event before the start of CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 7, 2018.

You may remember Light, the company that launched a smartphone-sized point-and-shoot with as many as 16 camera modules that covered the entire back of the phone. It remains to be seen how these nine or five lens systems will be implemented and whether the smartphone's camera will deliver on the result, given it will require the kind of processor which can support such high quality image processing. Light is reportedly claiming that the massive sensor line-up will offer 64MP photos, great depth effects and improved low light performance. The L16 works by collecting light information from the 16 different lenses and sensors mounted haphazardly on its back.

Is there an end in sight for Trump's trade war with China?
Thomas Donahue, president of the US Chamber of Commerce, said Monday the tariffs were "simply taxes that raise prices for everyone".

The company plans to unveil its first smartphone later this year, according to the Washington Post's Geoffrey A. Fowler. The camera is capable of taking 52MP photos, which are formed stitching together more than 10 perspectives. Huawei has also introduced a version of this, called the P21 Pro, featuring three lenses which are utilized for monochrome, color, and zoom.

The camera does not come cheap though - it is priced at €2,050 (roughly $2,389) and it can be purchased directly from Light's website. Light's 9-camera phone prototype may also have a hefty price tag when it releases. Is the rumoured Light phone immediately on your radar?
