A Reuters analysis found just 1% of the 1,102 categories of products imported from China to the us are consumer goods.

Beijing time is 12 hours ahead of Washington.

The EU exported 37.4 billion euros ($43.6 billion) of cars to the United States in 2017, while 6.2 billion euros worth of cars went the other way.

But the ministry issued a brief clarification in response.

In meetings in Brussels, Berlin and Beijing, senior Chinese officials, including Vice Premier Liu He and the Chinese government's top diplomat, State Councillor Wang Yi, have proposed an alliance between the two economic powers and offered to open more of the Chinese market in a gesture of goodwill.

China is pledging not to fire the "first shot" in its trade standoff with the United States, days before the Trump administration is poised to begin implementing tariffs on billions in Chinese imports. "And we're not planning anything now, but if they don't treat us properly, we'll be doing something", Trump said, without elaborating.

It also underscores China's new boldness in trying to seize leadership amid divisions between the United States and its European, Canadian and Japanese allies over issues including free trade, climate change and foreign policy.

In the currency market, the yuan bounced back from an 11-month low following moves by China's central bank on Tuesday to calm jittery financial markets.

Manchester United to hijack Juventus's move for Cristiano Ronaldo?
Real Madrid's genius for putting themselves centre stage of a tournament which has nothing to do with them continues unabated. Reports in the Spanish press emerged this week suggesting that the Portugal global is on his way to Juve in a £106m deal.

Chinese state media on Wednesday kept up a steady drum beat of criticism of the United States.

The official China Daily has taken another swing against the USA policy. "Now it is pursuing economic hegemony", the daily wrote.

It has frequently waged wars against other sovereign countries and made use of the dominant influence of the USA dollar in the global markets to fleece other countries.

The U.S. helped establish the WTO in 1995 as a way to mediate trade disputes and head off tit-for-tat trade wars of the kind that are now enveloping the U.S., Canada, Mexico, China, and the European Union.

Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst says the globe is braced for a trade war.

Donald Trump has threatened to escalate the conflict by imposing further tariffs on up to $200bn of Chinese goods, if Beijing retaliates on Friday.

The Trump administration is poised to beginning imposing tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods on Friday.
