Is there an end in sight for Trump's trade war with China?

Flake hits Trump over criticism of EU 'We need our allies with us'

According to the Financial Times, European leaders are getting more convinced that President Donald Trump will put new tariffs on European cars.

Thomas Donahue, president of the US Chamber of Commerce, said Monday the tariffs were "simply taxes that raise prices for everyone". The three Texas industries facing the biggest risk are all big traders with Canada, which has announced $12.6 billion in retaliatory tariffs against American-made products since Trump placed new tariffs on its aluminum steel. "Taken together, weaker-than-expected data gives markets room for thought on whether Trump protectionism has seeped into the real economy", said Song Seng Wun, an economist at CIMB Private Banking.

In a 10-page submission to the United States Commerce Department sent last Friday, the European Union said tariffs on cars and vehicle parts were unjustifiable and did not make economic sense. He dismissed suggestions that his attacks on the European Union were counterproductive.

Trump on Wednesday said he supported tougher restrictions on foreign investment in sensitive technology, as well as export controls on those goods, but he stopped short of imposing specific restrictions on China.

Muller says 27 percent of the pork product in the United States are exported.

"Whenever the train has left the station we are allowed to enter the platform", a Beijing-based European executive said.

In recent months, Trump has sparked a global-trade conflict by placing or threatening punitive tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of goods from China, Mexico, Canada, and the European Union.

This second list of tariffs is meant to target China's push to gain dominance in high-tech manufacturing, under a plan called Made in China 2025.

European Union officials said no decision to retaliate has yet been made, but warned such countermeasures could impact "a significant volume of trade" amounting to $294 billion "across sectors of the USA economy".

Several states that voted for Donald Trump in the presidential election are likely to be among the hardest hit in the trade war the president has triggered, according to the nation's largest business organization.

On Tuesday, Trump again slammed motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson on Twitter for moving some of its operations overseas to try to evade retaliatory tariffs on the motorcycles it ships to Europe.

Some of the hardest-hit states include Texas, where $3.9 billion worth of exports including pork and whiskey are under threat from retaliatory tariffs, and Alabama, where $3.6 billion worth of exports are threatened by tariffs on USA goods from China, the EU, Mexico and Canada.

The EU said in its submission that EU companies make around 2.9 million cars in the United States, which supports 120,000 jobs, or 420,000 jobs if vehicle dealerships and auto part retailers are included.
