Trump delaying NAFTA deal until after midterm elections

Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said the country will not back down on retaliatory tariffs

Trump enraged Canada and other United States allies by declaring imported steel and aluminium a threat to America's national security.

Trump has slapped tariffs on billions of dollars worth of steel and aluminum imports from China, the European Union, Canada and others, prompting retaliation against USA products.

The key US trade ally said the countermeasures will remain in effect until the Trump administration limits its trade restrictions on its goods.

Trump has repeatedly suggested Canada was profiting from USA trade, and his blistering comments after the G7 meeting drove bilateral relations to their lowest point in decades. The penalties will add 25 percent to the cost of United States steel, and 10 percent to aluminum and consumer goods. Some of the countries have already retaliated and filed legal challenges with the World Trade Organizaion.

Ketchup, mayonnaise, soy sauce, strawberry jam, mixed condiments and other sauces are also subject to levies.

They include a 25% tariff on unfinished iron and steel and a list of consumer goods like yogurt, maple syrup and toilet paper to name a few.

Purdue acknowledged that Trump was right to be point out the flaws in USA trade policy and make sure that America gets a fair shake on a global scale when it comes to trade agreements. That's about 86 percent of all U.S. global aluminum door and window exports, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA).

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated Canada is doing it to hold the USA accountable for its trade policies.

Trudeau and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke late Friday to discuss trade and other economic issues, the White House said Saturday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has said she spoke with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer six times last week and that she expects NAFTA talks to move into a higher gear this summer.

The Canadian government says the countermeasures will remain in place until the USA eliminates its trade-restrictive measures against Canadian steel and aluminium products.

In an interview that aired Sunday on Fox News, Trump said he could quickly sign a revised NAFTA with Canada and Mexico, but instead wants to land a better deal for the U.S. Asked about the timing of an agreement, Trump said: "I want to wait until after the election". "We can't allow those types of comments to throw us off our priorities", Singh said. In July, China is expected to impose a new 25-percent tariff on soybeans.
