Extreme Heat Continues Into Another Week

'Extreme, dangerous' heat to continue this week, meteorologists say

The heat wave is expected to persist for six to eight days in many communities, according to AccuWeather, with peak intensity hitting Monday.

The ridge of heat will gradually shift east by the second half of the week, which enable storm chances to increase slightly over the area. "A heat advisory may be needed during some of those periods", according to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the NWS. Tonight will be partly cloudy and muggy with a few showers. Highs for the holiday are likely to reach the lower 90s.

Extremely hot and humid with hazy sunshine. Highs may again drift into the low 90s, but showers and storms in the afternoon and evening may keep numbers down just a little.

Severe thunderstorms that could bring winds of up to 60 miles per hour are expected to start pushing through northeast IL and northwest IN during the late afternoon and continue into the night, the weather service said.

The weather service says Thursday looks to be the first sign of the heat wave truly weakening, and by Friday and Saturday a cold front should finally arrive in our region.

Protester climbs Statue of Liberty base, forcing evacuation
The group behind the banner, Rise and Resist , said the climber wasn't connected to the earlier demonstration. The woman, who was alone, has given "no indication" of why she was climbing the statue, Somma said.

Heat index values are expected to be up to 107 due to temperatures in the upper 90s and dewpoints in the low 70s.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: There will be a 30 percent chance of scattered rain showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Highs around 91. Wind SE 5-10 miles per hour.

Highs will tend to run 86-91 with heat indices peaking at 95-103.

Our limited chances for a thunderstorm continue into Thursday as the heat and humidity combine with another weak boundary that tries to push across the area.

Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to move through the area on Friday and Saturday, bringing with them cooler temperatures and less humid conditions, according to AccuWeather. Storms are possible, but mainly west of the D.C. metro. Most models do indicate most spots will see some rain but there are also a few models indicating several spots staying dry.
