Putin, Trump might discuss oil market situation

U.S. President Donald Trump will discuss Russia's "malign activity" during a summit with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders and follow up in a meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin to determine whether Moscow wants to reduce tensions, U.S. official said on Thursday.

"We recognize that the world is better off, I believe, if Russia and the United States have fewer tensions, get along a little better, maybe put aside some differences", Senator Richard Shelby said during Tuesday's meeting with Lavrov at the Russian foreign ministry.

The border guard of Finland may temporarily regain control on the borders with European Union countries in connection with the Helsinki meeting, trump and Putin. "We will have to wait and see".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed an upcoming summit between their presidents in a phone call Tuesday, according to the State Department. "I think the resumption of dialogue is going to be a very timely event on the eve of the forthcoming meeting between the two leaders", he added.

Some have criticised Trump's approach to speaking privately with world leaders - which one former official called a "threat to national security" - and have raised concerns that discussions may get lost in translation and that no formal U.S. record may be kept.

Motor tariffs could lead to £230bn retaliation — European Union warns Trump
Oil prices also fell after US President Donald Trump put pressure on Saudi Arabia to increase oil production. The EU, Mexico, Canada, Turkey and India introduced duties on United States products in return.

The congressmen also met their counterparts in both houses of the Russian parliament.

As Trump ascended to the highest office in the U.S., he frequently praised Putin and pledged a reset in U.S. -Russia ties, which had fallen out under the administration of President Barack Obama.

They first met Putin at the G20 summit in Germany past year, and spoke privately for over two hours accompanied only by translators, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Moscow and Washington announced the summit date after Trump's National Security Adviser John Bolton met with Putin in Moscow last week.

Trump has expressed scorn for the alliance and is expected to upbraid European NATO members for not spending enough on their own defense.
